A reliable friend was regailing me of his porsche activities today. He was out for a blat in his newish 911 on a SC NSL road he knows well in the midlands doing some big and very fast overtakes. He had seen an M5 with man and woman in it behind and not thought more of it (doh). Of course it's unmarked and follows him at a distance doing the same overtakes. When it finally pulls my friend, the Bib's estimate of speed was 120. My friend thinks he was generous. Anyway it seems that plod was so astounded that my mate had seen the M5 and not considered it might be plod that he gave him a bollocking and went on his way!!! How lucky is that?

Bert

Not condoning the action, just reporting the episode with some degree of astonishment. BTW it was actually a friend and I think he's a birk (in this respect).

How could he tell it was an M5 only seeing the front in his mirrors? Sure it wasn't a 520d but he didn't want to admit itwink

Don't the police pull infront of you when they pull you over, allowing him to see the badges and extra exhaust pipes?

I've been pulled a couple of times (no charges i might add!) and they've flashed the blues, i've pulled over, they pull over behind and keep the blues on to warn approaching traffic. Pretty standard i thought. I think they only swerve in front on Police, Camera, Actionwink

Perhaps because there no over-filled dustbins to crash into?

M5s have oval rear view and door mirrors.

it's perfectly possible that it wasn't an M5. But my mate got to see all of it as he had gone past it previously on a DC prior to the hooning on the A road. Also when he was finally pulled, he had turned into an estate toward his home and stopped to see what the mystery Beemer was about! I assume he was beginning to get an inkling by then!

I share plod's disbelief in my mate's utter stupidity in not working it out!!!!!

So the police are more lenient towards those who are lacking in brain cells? Obviously our best chance is therefore to act stupid if we're stopped. Or perhaps adopt a foreign accent and "no understand" stance?

This sounds odd. No self-respecting BiB would let someone off 120+ in a 60 on the basis that they were too stupid to notice they were being followed. There must be more to it than we're being told? Perhaps the car's speedo calibration hadn't been validated that day, or the 2 BiBs couldn't agree on what charges to bring?

What Peter said.

My first thought on reading the OP was that something's not right about this. Being let off because he DIDN'T spot them?

I should coco.

I know of at least three of them in Scotland; 1 batenburg, 2 unmarked.

Or that the overtakes were in fact safe, after all they did the same overtakes.

Yes there is an M5 about btw. wink

dont forget that plod didnt say, I'm letting you off because you were very stupid in not spotting we were unmarked. Plod seemed to talk about my mates stupidity in not spotting them and also on taking the risk with his licence.

He said that the overtakes were not inherently unsafe and used something like "he couldnt get a lock", I guess referring to the speed detection equipment.

End result, my mate will now think twice when he is hooning about as the licence loosing prospect suddenly became pant-soilingly close. He has a lot of respect for the way he was dealt with.

Good policing, unfair? Dunno. Lucky?? I'd say so!

Also a lot more chrome on the front grills, the 520d for instance has black plastic in grilly bits.
