After a slight boxedin on a nice big road in Scotland today, whilst perfectly safely overtaking some "slower" moving traffic I was pulled further up the road by the Trafpolcop or whatever their called in Scotland for: Being somewhat over the NSL during my manouver - ahem.

Anyway, got chatting explained about my roadcraft keen'ness, I asked if I'd done everything to the book & it was agreed, I had in fact made excellent progress (His words) in a safe & well defined manner without causing anyone any bother, a fine example of driving compared to the usual they see biggrin

They had to pull me just to be sure - fair enough. A slight ticking off & a good check over the car had me ready to be waved on when:

Nice Mr cop leaned through my window & said: I quote

"Just beware the Safety Camera Team are operating further down the road & they don't appreciate roadcraft"

Says it all really bow

Good result. Nice to see flesh-and-blood coppers of the same mind as the rest of us. If you HAD been driving like a tw't, I'm sure they'd have chucked the book at you mind...

And quite rightly so, its a well known & potentially dangerous road so they were doing their job well. I always try & drive as if plod are about just in case & its always done me well. On the same trip I could have counted at least a dozen incidents worthy of a pull, several DD/DWDC events etc so I'm in no doubt they had a busy shift.

Couple of years ago now I was walking home from the rail station one Saturday night, turned a corner and there was a maxxed Nova with 4 yoofs inside, just coming to a halt having pulled by trafpol...

As I walked closer, trafpol reached the driver's window. Yoof looks suitably concerned under his face of bravado for his mates.

Trafpol leans in the window and his opening gambit was "Evening Michael, good bit of overtaking there. I'm confused though, and I was only stopping you to see if you could help me, you see I thought the German Grand Prix wasn't until tomorrow, and I kinda thought it was taking place in Germany."

Then he looked over the car roof at me as I walked past on the pavement, and grinned.

Magic (when you're not on the receiving end).

I've had than one, only not quite so well exicuted, it went
"The Grand Prix's not til tomorrow"

other fav's "Are you exempt from the speed limit then sir"

and while I was trying to be nice and get him off topic asked if he thought the T5 vovlo was any good, as I was genuinly thinking of getting one, he said
"Yes they ARE very good, but you have to be able to keep them with in the speed limit"

Allegedly, and this maybe urban myth. A certain Mr A Senna esquire was stopped by Her majesty's finest, who started the conversation with the then standard "And who do we think we are sir Nigel Mansell?" If the story is true I would love to have seen the great one's face!!

Said to me by BIB with 18 years experience:

"I have a big problem with someone's doing 50 in a 30, but I have no problem with someone's doing 150 on a clear, open road."

Happened to Stirling Moss, in the days when he was usually the object of the question - Streaky

I got pulled in Nevada once, in the middle of nowhere, 70 miles in either direction to anywhere or anything - doing about 115 in a 75 limit.

Plod asked me why I was doing 115 - I replied that the frickin hire car must have a limiter cos it just wouldn't go any quicker.

He laughed, said to watch out from about 20 miles outside Vegas as the cops there have no sense of humour and sent me on my way.

There are good-uns out there...

Nigel Mansel, whilst living in the Isle of Man was once pulled over and asked "who do you think you are, nigel mansel?". True story heard from the man himself, the funniest thing is that Nigel Mansel was actually a traffic cop over in the IOM too.

Nah he was a voluntary Part-time Special and I heard that they wouldn't let him drive a police car over there.

Anyway he once drove on to Port Erin beach in a brand new G-wagen towing a brand new speedboat and got stuck in the sand.

A guy had to bring his 1973 Range Rover onto the beach and tow both the G-wagen, speed boat and a very embarrassed Mansell off the beach

My brother had a Mk2 Escort Harrier in the early 80's.

Cop stopped him and said "stop trying to make the Harrier fly please and slow it down a bit"

it was five to 8 though and he was till 10 mins from work!

Tracey Edwards, similarly, was pulled in Maiden II shortly after claiming the title of fastest yacht in the world - for exceeding 8knots in the Thames with the words "Who do you think you are..."

Stopped in Florida by Highway Patrol. The (classic) fat officer got out of his car, hitched up his gun-belt (he could not have drawn his weapon for the folds of fat hanging over the holster!) and rolled over to where I was stopped with window wound down and hands at five-to-one on the steering wheel. His opening words were:

"You were passin' those cayars like they were standin' still!"

I was only doing 95 (as fast as seemed safe in a Crown Victoria), but he was correct! American drivers! American cars!

I was at a football match.
Been in a cordon between 2 herds of fans for ages.
I was tired, wet, covered in spittle, needfull of a toilet and not in my most jovial of moods.
A man who had been shouting in my face for about half an hour, started telling me what he thought of the policing arrangements and my part in them.
Then he reminded me that he paid my wages.

I removed my helmet and said 'Look, Do you want to wear this?'
'No I don't'
'Well feck off then'
Even the Chief Inspector, who I hadn't seen arrive next to me, laughed.
