Protect number plates, say police
Discussion
From today's Leamington Courier.
And I love the idea of using plates as reinforcement for skateboards. I guess that's the most likely explanation....

Police are urging motorists in Warwickshire to fit anti-theft number plate screws to their cars following a recent rise in thefts.
Some 25 sets of registration plates have been stolen in the county during the past month, incuding six thefts in Leamington, four in Warwick and three each in Southam and Bishops Itchington.
There has been a nationwide increase in the crimes, and police are still unsure of the reasons for it.
Stratford community safety officer PC Nick Stephens said, "We are still considering why number plates are being stolen. Several theories have been suggested such as avoiding speed cameras and congestion charges, changing the identity of vehicles used in crime and also that plates are being used to reinforce skate boards".
<article continues on fitting non-reversible screws>
Note that the article says that there has been a nationwide increase in plate theft. I suppose it may be inaccurate reporting on the PC's statement, but if not then it displays a worrying naivety. Once the police and judiciary consider your registration plate to be a failsafe means of identification, non-reversible screws are not going to be sufficient to safeguard your plates. Some 25 sets of registration plates have been stolen in the county during the past month, incuding six thefts in Leamington, four in Warwick and three each in Southam and Bishops Itchington.

They'll have a hard time stealing the one off the front of my MX5. Seeing as it's a stick on. For me it has to be the way to go, but of course they are technically not allowed because they are not rigid and so not safe....dohLeamington Spa Courier said:

skateboards??? thats a new one on me, when I used to skate a good deck would cost nigh on £100 and although you would break them from time to time I cant quite see how whacking a number plate between the trucks and deck (im assuming thats where its supposed to go) would help reinforce anything, infact it would probably just shatter and fall apart....

Not sure why we bother with number plates - Memeber of public spots crime, reports number plate, nothing happens.
Why not convert number plates to barcodes? These are far more easily read by machines, people won't dick about with spacing / fonts etc.
Think of the market for "personalised barcodes". Why not convert number plates to barcodes? These are far more easily read by machines, people won't dick about with spacing / fonts etc.

me, it doesn't take a genius to work it out. Remove the police from the roads and sit them all behind desks watching cameras and dishing out fixed penalties and this is the result.Do you think they'll appreciate it if I give them a ring and tell then why plates are being stolen?
'My car's been stolen'
'What's its barcode?'
'erm.....'
Don't see that it would change anything TBH. The ungodly would still nick them to put on other cars to avoid speeding fines, kengestion charges and the like, and real owners would lose the chance of showing off a personalised plate.

WE have found caches of them in the most bizarre places, obviously put there by kids. Often only one plate from each vehicle.
If it were to clone cars there would be more hits on the stolen plates than there are.
So what is the answer?
I'd love to know.

Aren't the plates used to put under table legs in pubs to stop the table rocking?
Oh no, that's still beermats isn't it.......Surely it's bleedin' obvious given the mushrooming of scumeras and ANPR? If at least 10% of cars on the roads are uninsured, the scrotes who are uninsured aren't going to worry about the additional penalty of using a false plate, surely......

BiB around here are somewhat mystified as well following a spate of rear number plate thefts (only the rears, and seemingly from a random selection of cars).I'll put my money on the "kids, 'cos they can" theory: there's probably some US rap artist who has set a trend by wearing a yellow 'plate with black lettering around his neck.

VW badge syndrome anyone?

I had my front plate nicked a couple of weeks ago. It was definitely nicked cos when I went back to check that it hadn't just fallen off, both screws were on the ground where my car had been parked.
Informed the BiB. I'm just waiting on the NIPs to come flooding in through the letterbox now that someone's got my plate on the front of their car!!
Wonder how much convincing they'll need that it wasn't me?

Car manufacturers respond with embedding the aerial into window loops or maybe those shark fin thingyumyjigs. (Technical term that)
So they, the scrotes / kids move onto something else, because they can.
Dons joke tin foil hat and engages taking the mick mode.
You do realise that secret squirrels have been going round paying gangs to do this so the public will more readily accept the introduction of changes to number plate legislation.

I've just bought a smart from a Merc dealer and they insist on using these stupid plastic frames that the numberplate just clips into. A small screwdriver and the frames are open - numberplates removed.
Utter madness, but then no-one would consider nicking plates of a Merc (or a smart) would they?
