Abandoned Car - taking ownership

Probably because it's a Maserati Merak.
Yep.The idea is to rescue it and give it away to someone who will restore it or use bits for their own car. Even if it needs a lot of work, if the base car is free then it must be economically viable for someone!
I can't believe someone inferred I owned a caravan/am a gypsy!!

Is there any legal way of becoming the owner of an abandoned car?
The car's tax ran out in 2003 and has been left in an undercover carpark since then.
Many thanks in advance for any advice received.
Is it a private car park? if so its no differnt then if it was parked in your own garage, eg its not abandoned. The only person who might have a claim is the person who owns the garage. The car's tax ran out in 2003 and has been left in an undercover carpark since then.

Couple of simple steps to claim any untaxed car.
You must be able to prove youtook all reasonable setps to contact the owner.
You must contact the local cop shop.
Get a form from the Post Office to send to the DVLA claiming the car.
They contact the last registered keeper.
After a period thy will send you a V5 - your car.
Only down side is that the V5 is not an ownership document, by that I mean if the original owner shows up, you have to give them the car. Wierd I know, but true.

The DVLA have a form for legitimate requests for ownership details.
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/forms/v888.pdf
Once you have that, send a registered letter to the last owner saying that unless he contacts you within X days you will charge parking of £X per day until you consider that the parking bill is more than the value after which time you will apply to DVLA for V5 and dispose of vehicle.

Many thanks chap!
If it's in a PAY AND DISPLAY...is it?..Displaying a valid paid ticket that is?
If so it may not be abandoned at all.
If it isn't, the P&D owner (as already pointed out) would be your next point of call to find out if it is actually abandoned and not being 'taken care of' by them for some mate away on an extra long sabbatical to the Amazon or some such
