Dumfries income generation scheme
Discussion
If this is indeed a local income generation scheme why don't they privatise it instead of continuing the pretence of it having anything to do with justice?
press clipping from Dumfries and Galloway Standard July 2007.......
MOTORISTS in Dumfries and Galloway get more speeding tickets than anywhere else in the UK.
In 2005/06, more than 16,000 people were caught on the regions roads bringing in just under £1million.
The figures are part of a survey by the publishers of the Philips Road Atlas.
Across Scotland the number of speeding tickets issued fell by 21 per cent.
However, the numbers in Dumfries and Galloway show an equivalent of £6.55 is raised for every resident, compared to the Scottish average of £1.42 per head.
Stuart Hamilton from the Dumfries and Galloway Safety Partnership, said: "Dumfries and Galloway is unique. It has the smallest regional population in Scotland and three main arterial routes, the M74, A76 and A75.
"The majority of users on these routes are a travelling population who do not reside in the Dumfries and Galloway.
"Comparing the per head of population figures does not ring true. Traffic on the M74 can double the population of the area. Residents of the region do not use these roads everyday."
Stephen Mesquita compiled the recently published figures, he said: "In the case of Dumfries and Galloway, it has a very low population and some very busy roads with people whizzing through so I think it's a bit of an anomaly."
In 2006, 25 people were killed on the regions roads and the police have launched various initiatives to increase road safety.
Mr Hamilton added: "We were out on the M74 this morning and in a 20 minute period four people were detected doing more than 90mph, one at 99.
"The publicity from these figures is welcomed as it highlights our commitment to improving safety in Dumfries and Galloway."

A combination of Trucks lumbering to and from Stranraer and doddery old folk enjoying the view and unwilling to overtake create mile long convoys that make overtaking impossible.
When you get to the nice long stretches outside Dumfries you get the only oppertunity to get past, so of course the scameras are going to wait there and pick you off like shooting fish in a barrel.
It's such a shame as some of the roads in that area are superb, but you have to choose between constantly driving 10-15MPH under the limit or be constantly overtaking if you want to make progress.
Or buy a bike!

Last year, I made the journey from Carlise to Stranraer.Horrible. Two hours of tedium following lorries
with very few opportunities to overtake.
The road would be a lot safer and a lot faster
if they upgraded it to dual carraigeway.
Much better than messing about with speed
cameras.
Perhaps worth asking the Northern Irish for help
paying for the new road ?
Stranraer to Belfast is one of the main entry
points to NI.
There is a silver volvo currently doing the rounds up there, drives up from behind way over the limit like a hooligan, occassionally flashing his headlights and pushing you to go faster, even wavering about in the outside lane as if he's about to overtake, but he doesn't. Instead he waits long enough until he's managed to force you into making a few mistakes ........then he turns on his flashing blue lights as he wants to show you the video he's just made............

140mph should be no biggie on the A74((M)) much of the time.
Stinky parasites them SCPs.
Ho Ho Ho?Stinky parasites them SCPs.

Much of the A74((M)) resembles the sort of road in Germany where one can safely, and legally, average 140+mph for much of the time.
To enforce a 70mph limit on such a road is naught but vile oppression.

A74 M & M74 used to be terminal velocity territory.
...and safely so.
Good road, good sightlines, few junctions and lightish traffic.
70 limit is a crime.
But then, this administration would have to do a U turn.

Nowadays - unless the reasons for the traps are that there is little political backlash, as few customers live in the area and can't vote out the partnerships bosses , this road should be classified as a high speed road.
But then, this administration would have to do a U turn.
We in Scotland are working on being rid of them. But then, this administration would have to do a U turn.

Edit: the "?" in Who me ?'s name breaks the quoting
