Afternoon Chaps,
Not that im making you all jealous, but im off to america next week. Was wondering what the story is about paying speeding fines. For example if caught by police on radar, and he pulls me over, is there any point in paying it, as i could be leaving to go home.. Not that im that much of a speeder, but im sure ill creep over 25mph and 55 on the motorway.
Cheers Simon.

Choice is yours. If you never intend going to America again then why not. However if you decide to go again I would suggest you may find yourself in a different sort of accomodation to that planned. Not that im making you all jealous, but im off to america next week. Actually in the middle of my 1st trip to the 'States and been driving a lot. Advice is, don't mess around with the cops here. If you get caught and do a runner out of the country, they will get you next time - or you just won't get back in. Speed limits vary all over the place up to 70mph on some parts of the Freeways/Interstates. 25/35/45 in built up areas.
Oh, the driving standards are spectacularly bad and the rules of allowing overtaking and undertaking take some getting used to.
I'm here on business and got pulled by Immigration for an interview on arrival. BTW, to correct a previous post, you only get 1 digit electronically fingerprinted on the way in.
Biggest shock here is that almost everyone drives when drunk here. Got a friend who was looking (failing) to find a taxi one night after 6 pints and the cops pulled him and forced him to go get his car a drive home in case he got into trouble! Weird.

You'd have to be quite slow-witted to actually receive a ticket in the US. This always works for me:
When pulled over, greet copper with your best 'British' accent 'Hello old chap - did I do something wrong?'
Continue buttering up cops by telling them how lucky they are to live in the greatest country in the world and that the only reason you exceeded the speed limit was because you were unfamiliar with how powerful real American cars are. Tell them in England, where it rains all the time, you can't drive anything with an engine more than 1.6 litres or you go to prison. Then tell them that Their roads are so good and the distances so great that you accidentally let the speed build up too much and you are very sorry.
If you still get a ticket after that load of BS, you must've run over the cops granny without noticing!

,
One thing you MUST remember.
If you see a trooper on the side of the interstate / highway, and has a car pulled over, you must vacate the inside lane,
Failing that you must reduce your speed to 20mph below the posted limit.
FAILING THAT, HE WILL BE ON YOU TAIL VERY QUICKLY,

Ahh yes, reminds me of my brother, many many years ago on a school trip to Italy. When pulled over, greet copper with your best 'British' accent 'Hello old chap - did I do something wrong?'

Walks up to man with feather'd hat (caribinarie) and says "'Ere John, where the f'in p*ss house". Expecting Italian response along the lines of "I'm sorry sir, I didn't understand your question", he got "Straight over the Piazza, first left, about 100yds on the right, and less of yer lip sonny jim" in a broad Cock-a-nee accent!!!!!
So, from that, be warned, you may not be dealing with Deputy Enus of the Hazzard County Sheriff's dept. It may be former Constable Fred Bloggs from the Met, now living happily in the US of A.
The main thing is to stay calm, and "Re-main in your ve-hickle"
Then put on your best Terry Thomas, or Leslie Philips, remembering to call him Officer, and be extremely polite - especially when he's talking to you with his hand on his sidearm or cuddling his 12-gauge calling you "Boy" at every opportunity.
Remember, that below the Manson/Nixon line, in the South, they wear mirror shades where the mirrors are on the inside, and they'll throw you in jail with a big dude called Bubba who's gonna have yo' ass.
They're very friendly like that.
Where are you going? and what car will you be driving?
If you're going south, drive a pickup. You'll blend in.

Many moons ago I was driving my buddy's Chevy Suburban back to his place in Brownwood, Texas. We'd been down to the Houston Space Centre for the day and it was about 11:30pm, we'd just left Comanche heading for Brownwood.
Decided that it would be nice to get home before midnight so wound the 'Burb up to 70. Ten seconds later there are red and blue lights in the mirror. Guess the cop must've been behind a bush or in a ditch somewhere.
Anyway, pulled over and wound the window down and waited for the officer to walk up to the truck. My two mates were feigning being asleep.
Ask cop in best Queens English what the problem was and he says were you in a hurry to get somewhere so told him where we'd been. He asked me what speed did I think I was doing so I said "about 70, it's what we're allowed to do in England officer", to which he replies "uh-hu". Then asks for the registration and insurance papers so I hand them over and he checks and hands back.
"Got a licence?" So I give him my British Licence (pre plastic paper one) and my International Licence. He folds out the British Licence and looks at both sides, then folds it back up, still holding the International one. "This all you got?" "Thats all I need office, I checked with Immigration".
So now he looks at the International licence... I think it was when he got to the page where it was all printed in Japanese that he decided that the papework probably wasn't worth it. Told me to remember the limit was 55 and to enjoy the rest of my vacation!

I was pulled doing about 80 in a 55 some years ago (well it was in the middle of nowhere). I gave him my paper license. His reply was "you're not from around here are you?" No shit!( I didn't say that btw) He then asked for photo ID, so gave him my passport - which had my plane tickets in for the next day. When he saw the date, he wrote me a ticket, then escorted me to the nearest town to a post office, where I had to buy a money order ($75), and post off the fine. Although I was a little pissed off, he did shake my hand and wished me a good flight home. When pulled over, greet copper with your best 'British' accent 'Hello old chap - did I do something wrong?'

PAY THE TICKET!! the hire company will have your details and most importantly an imprint of your credit card ,the fine will be charged to your credit card with any addnl admin charges they see fit to add .p.s some interstate speed limits are 75 and petrol is $3 a gallon ! how sad i am to be home .Not that im making you all jealous, but im off to america next week. Since the Federal 55 limit has gone, it's surprising how quick some of the freeways now run. The average speeds achieved in many states are higher than ours and there are really no cameras to speak of. Yes, there are many manned patrols, but the fines are relatively low and there is no obsession with 'points' for the drivers on USA licences.
In fact, on long interstate journeys it's a pleasure to drive there now and the sort of rental cars you get if you opt for a 'full size' car are generally quite good for long-distance cruising.
One big advantage the Americans have is that as they have a written constitution they can't be forced to incriminate themselves by a demand to name the driver. If you don't get stopped, you ain't been nicked!

Got done many moons ago driving from Monterey up to San Fran. Was doing 80 + plus although the speed on my ticket was 79 - I didn't realise police cars could clock you as they came towards you much to the MPV full of my mates hilarity.
Had a bill for 70 quid drop through the door when I was back home - this was round ten years ago so I guess the fine would be more these days.
I paid.

A friend of mine was living and working in Washington DC in the early 90’s. He decided to drive down to Daytona. Anyway driving through the back waters of North Carolina in a stream of traffic at 55 , open road, open countryside. In the middle of this is a 30 limit sign, which everyone ignores. Fair enough he thinks and stays with the stream speed. A hundred yards later speed limit goes back to 55. Half a mile later a police car works its way up the stream of traffic and pulls him over, ignoring everyone else. Next thing he knows he is in the local county jail house over night and up in front of the judge in the morning and given some ridiculous fine. I think it was about $500. Why was he pulled and no one else, because his car had the out of state plates (West Virginia in his case). This little speed trap enterprise was how this impoverished county made some income. 100 yards of 30mph, pull the out of state cars, let the locals through, throw the criminal in clink over night to scare them, big fine next day, person relieved to get away with a big fine and not meeting 200lbs of bubbler saying “you’re my little toy now”. So be careful out there in the sticks.
This guy has a history of this sort of thing including getting pulled by the East German police on the road over to Berlin in the 80’s doing about 120 in a Porsche and spending a couple of hours with a sub machine gun in is back, while his mate went back to west Germany to get enough Marks to pay the fine.
So maybe we’re not as badly off as we think over here!
