An odd question this.

A friend has (honestly, it isn't me!) obtained an e-mail which was provided to her which states "tell her to kill herself", but it is a copy of a message in reply to something she has written, but then has been forwarded on to someone else. That someone else, who wrote "tell her to kill herself" has the name obscured on the e-mail, so she has no idea who it is. So it seems someone has seen that, thought it was out of order, and dropped it on her desk BUT hidden the name of the culprits.

Now, is this bullying at work? Is it incitement to suicide? Would any police officer take action on something like that? This is not a one-off situation in respect of bullying at work, but it could be a couple of people who have written that comment.

Sounds like an odd situation I know, and it certainly seems odd to me, but there we go.

go and have a word with HR department, most HR bods are pretty switched on to this sort of stuff and dont treat it lightly, if they ignore it they leave themselves open to all kinds of sueing/indistrial tribunal stuff.

Agree with davidro. Tell her to take this E-mail to HR or whoever in charge of department. I think she should perhaps play cool hand here. Not appear upset or concerned, but matter of fact that she think this behaviour unprofessional und could perhaps a general to all staff go out stating that unprofessional conduct of any description not tolerated - along with clause along lines of "abuse of e-mail".

Hope that help.

Not sure about whether 'incitement to suicide' is the intention any more that telling someone to 'Go F*** yourself' is incitement to rape! smile

However, there is something out of order here, and if it is a large company they may take abuse of the email system as a gross misconduct offence.

I would certainly speak to the HR department about it, and push them into action.

Is it possable to rape yourself? scratchchin

If you are scyitzophenic(sp), do you have to get consent from yourself before you have a wank?
And how depressing would it be if your other side said "no, not tonight, I'm not in the mood"

Interestingly it MAY be the HR officer who has written this !! It is a fairly small company.

Have a look through the email headers. If the message has been forwarded then it should have the details of everyone who has sent the message on. It will also have the IP address of every machine. The network admin should be able to tell you who sent what to who and when.

I would guess that the email is a actually a hard copy if it's had the sender's name obscured.

I thought this was a site with a fair number of IT geeks ? With little effort the email could be tracked and the sender found.

Yep, piece of the proverbial to track back and locate the email. Someone's in trouble.
