Hi guys. Need some advice from either cops....or folk who know their stuff.

On a bank holiday monday in April I was clocked doing 56 in a 30mph zone. It was 3.30am. Roads were bone dry. No traffic or pedestrians and on a fairly straight road.

I do admit that I was speeding. Looking back I regret it. It was a waste of petrol. However at the same time my license is currently spotless. I'd love to keep it that way.

The details - The police were in a clearly marked Range Rover. They were reversed up a side street on the left hand side of the road. They were quite far back, almost hidden by a house on the corner. As I approached them I noticed them but by that time it was clearly too late as they were coasting forward and turned their lights on.

Im certain the officer holding the gun (it was a small hand held gun with two lenses on the fornt.) was still in the car. He must've been for them to roll forward before i'd even passed them. Is that not a requirement, that the officer must be outside the car? And that the car must be visable from 150 yards?

If this is not the case then I shall be pleading guilty. I recieved all the paperwork after roughly 3 months. I have three options.
1) court 2) plead guilty or 3) provide an explanation

I did not ask for gun calibration certificates at the time as I didnt want to make life hard for myslef.

I plan on pleading guilty but was considering writing a letter asking the procurator fiscal to go easy as its my first offence, it was perfect driving conditions, the road was empty etc. Also i've started working part time for a friend as a delivery driver. He says he can also write a letter as it will effect the company insurnce for me? will these letters be worth a try?

Did they fire the laser through an open window, or closed window?

For the old handheld radar devices, ACPO guidelines say that it should not be operated from inside a vehicle.

However, with the newer laser devices, the guidelines say that they can be used through the open window of a vehicle.

The device you describe sounds like a handheld laser device, so it's more than likely that the Officer was using it within the guidelines.

Forgive my ignorance...but if BiB was parked in a side road aiming out of the passenger side window..he doesn't have a very long time to locate lock and shoot the car he reckons to be speeding.
Don't they have to track a vehicle with the laser or can they simply 'point and shoot'?

If they did catch me through an open window the passenger would've had to aim through the drivers window across the other cops lap!

Also wouldn't the Bib be at right angles to your vehicle?
I thought these lasers were designed to measure the speeds of vehicles moving towards or away from the camera not vehiclesconfused travelling ACROSS its path...
