Sorry, I couldn't resist the temptation to use that phrase...

I just saw a van -- a National Grid van, of all things -- bearing the legend:

Kill your speed
Drive safely

A clear implication that driving more slowly makes you a safer driver. So, no need to bother with all that concentration, observation, anticipation stuff; just kill your speed and you'll be safer.

Now for the irony bit: this van proceeded through a long (about 75 yards) chicane even though there was a cyclist coming the other way. Result was that the van had to mount the curb in order to get past the cyclist. The guy on the bike didn't look best pleased. I just waited at the entrance to the chicane until the cyclist passed (got a friendly "thank you" wave from him) and carried on. Nah, it's obvious that the only thing you have to do to be a safer driver is just slow down.

A bit like the 'Kill your speed, not a child' slogan, as if there was a clearly defined choice.

I've seen similar stickers before on the back of vans/trucks...and in most cases the display of corporate hypocrisy is breathtaking!

Oh...found my perfect bumper-sticker the other day, while on the subject of speed-related signs on vehicles:-

"I drive too fast to worry about cholesterol!"
