On the face of it, a good day spent wielding a big stick

I've been wondering what the drawbacks are of its use
both in pro-actively seeking out misceants by number plate

and lack of plod elsewhere, and I'm as yet undecided
but I'd be interested to read others thoughts

Know what you are saying,

Criminals use cars just as every one else, and looking at the big picture and resources used it is horrific, but what would all these plods be doing other wise, I would guess most would be doing the same with a hunch or gut feeling. I bet if you were to look at how many arrest etc that number would be doing on a given day you can bet that ANPR is more fruit full.

I do hope this is case,

but its not an all-cure to societies ills
in much the same way cameras on posts won't be

Laws are partly formed for the sake of good men, in order to instruct them how they may live on friendly terms with one another, and partly for the sake of those who refuse to be instructed, whose spirit cannot be subdued, or softened, or hindered from plunging into evil.
Plato (427 BC - 347 BC)

2500 years and counting you will never cure societies ills...

I would guess that for the most part, the people who come here and complain about ANPR are complaining because they are generally honest people who feel they've been wronged if the ANPR gets it wrong and the resultant BiB refuses to accept they have insurance and the computer's wrong etc.

I'd also guess that in the real world the vast, vast bulk of criminals are the sort of people who, well let's face it if you burgle houses for a living you probably aren't going to care too much about having valid tax, MOT or insurance are you?

I'd be interested to see what any BiB here think?

Of course I'm not sure how you get from "we stopped you as the computer says you have no tax/insurance" to "we'll just check in the boot, Hello Hello what have we here then?"

IMHO a fantastic result of BiB resources.

BiB's tell me, would the 453 cars pulled all have registered as no tax/insurance/MOT?

So was this for want of a better term a "check point" or were officers choosing cars to pull?

The ANPR doesn't only check & provide hits on no tax/insurance reports, there are a variety of other reports that will flag vehicles up.

Intelligence reports, PNC circulations, stolen reports, warant system checks.

The list isn't endless, but it's quite long.
