a guy at the end of our street who seems like a bit of a petrolhead (which is fine) given his VXR Monaro has taken upon himself to purchase a steam tractor? not sure if that is the right description but its basically one of those big things that look like a steam powered road roller from days gone by...he's also aquired what appears to be a large pull along ye-olde trailer for it and when i say trailer i mean it looks like a circus vehicle on steam roller wheel and is about the height of a bedford luton.

this vehicle and trailer have been conveniently parked on the street taking up one lane right outside his house. obviously this sort of vehicle cannot be parked half on half off the pavement.

now don't get me wrong this eyesore is covered over under what can only be called "covers" and it is parked totally out of sight of my house but i have to drive past it to get out of the road and can only sympathize with the poor sods who live opposite / next to him and it.

so the question is...is he breaking the law? can you legally park something like this (clearly not any everyday vehicle) in a residential road (no markings on our road) legally even though its likely to never move for sometime? I mean you have to have a permit to put a skip in the road these days so how does this measure up?

Cannot rememebr what I read on this site about HGV parking in a residential. I think they had to have some kind of permission off head memory. Contact local council to see if some bye-law cover this if causing obstruction/nuisance to everyone. Help if you sound out others' opinions too so that you can complain together too. wink

Try chatting to this bloke as well - find out what long term plans are for the large vehicle.

There are alot more ugly things on the road.... corsa's, fiestas, and well don't get me started about Ka's or that Ugly fiat thing..

I don't know about you guys, getting uptight about the simplest things. Honestly wouldn't see what the problem was. The dude probably doesn't have anywhere else to put it for now, tollerance doesn't seem to be a thing the english have at all.

I'm all for tolerance...but what if there's now 3 or 4 less parking spaces in the street now? I think if I was going to go into that sort of hobby, I'd need to make sure I had the land on which to store it.

I wouldn't be too worried about it if there is enough parking on the street. What was being complained about is that one lane is blocked. If it was a major road and causing major traffic jams, then yeah, could agree, it probably isn't the best place to park it. But if it is parked up on a street that very little people use, I can't really see the problem. OK, maybe when there is the odd car you have to wait, then geez... my advice would be to get a life..

I would have to say it`s not every day you see these on the road , but remember they were day to day transport .
These steam motor do not need mot but special inspection .
I would say you are luck to have such vehicle in your street , i would swap with the chavs in my street revving engine and loud music all night kicking balls at my car and other people cars. leaning on cars scratching them .
Why do you not look at it from the other side ,Take your kids down and ask if you could show your kids the steam engine .As if it was not for guys like this these cracking machines may not be about for your grand kids .

No you're right it wasn't ... it was hypothetical. But it seems reasonable to assume that it wouldn't be parked on yellow lines or it would draw attention from the authorities. So if it's parked on the road, and there's no yellows, and it's a residential street...it might be reasonable to assume that there might be parking spaces being used up...and several of them given that it also has a trailer.

If however it is parked out side his house... then surely it shouldn't be a problem. As for asthestics for the streets and houses having a stream driven tractor in your street, well, you will have to take that up with the 3 architects who seemed to have designed almost every house in the UK. As far as I am concerned a steam tractor has every right to park in the street as does a Ka or for that matter one of those ugly fiat looking things.

yeah, its nice to see a bit of indivualism... rather than just another grey box, SUV or chav-mobile filling the road..

I'd much rather have one of those than the BT transit - the rotting transit pickup, the nice sparkly new transit... all parked on the road taking up parking spaces.

I'm sure you're right...but there's a social conscience issue here...do you not think that there should be a line drawn between "having a right" to do something, and doing something which you know will upset your neighbours and might mean they can't park outside their own houses? As the OP said...pity the poor sods who live opposite/next door.

Does it have road tax (for £0.00 I guess)? If so, then it can legally be parked on the street.

The OP does appear to be complaining about the look of the thing rather than any missing parking spaces - somewhat NIMBYish IMO.

Maybe he asked his neighbours whether they'd mind and maybe they said they didn't mind at all and indeed it made a change to have such an interesting vehicle parked at the side of the public highway.

LOL - it could well be. I was being very hypothetical and making loads of assumptions...I'll shut up now!! ;-)

Well, I wouldn't have a problem with it at all. I think it would be quiet alright with me. If it meant you were taking up parking spaces, then yeah, no problem I could see the point. I guess my question would be that if someone was to park a car an a caravan in front of their house, would the neighbours still bitch and complain? Would be a similiar length.

I find alot of people get uptight over the slightest thing, and at the end of the day, does it really matter? I had a similar thing happen when I use to own an old ambulance, and it got completely tagged when I was in London. Neighbours in my street in Portsmouth complained about it, but really, what could I do about it. I didn't tag the thing... and well, was going to repaint it anyhow, yet they felt that they had the right to complain about it. OK, it didn't look nice and pretty and shiney but neither did a pink VW beetle that was parked in the street.

BTW, I would be complaining about people who think Pebble-Dashing is a good idea... but then again, it is their house, and they can do with it what they want.

Its a chimney and I can provide a photo of it outside if you like wink

The quality of the smoke depends on the quality of the coal. Raise steam on wood alone and it'll be near smoke free.

I'd guess it wont be there for long - the guy has probably parked it up on the way to or from an event.
