cos,

another mate of mine has recieved an NIP saying that he exceeded the Resticted Speed Limit.

he was in a car, which sort of rules out the vehicle class (such as 40MPH for an HGV in a NSL for instance), or it was a temp speed limit on a single carriageway which doesn't carry points, or so I thought.

any ideas chaps?

A road with a system of streetlighting no more than 200 yrds apart is a restricted road unless there is an order derestricting it. Any other road may be restricted by order.

Limit on restricted roads is 30mph for all vehicle classes.

Correct (unless it's a classified road, because they need an Order in any case), but that's a "restricted road" as you say, not a "restricted speed limit".

The term "restricted speed limit" has no special significance as far as I am aware, I think it means the same as "speed limit" ie the maximum speed to which vehicles are restricted). I'm not sure about this one though...

Not sure quite what the OP is after.

Temp speed limits do carry points if that helps.

sorry 7db,

what I was getting at is that temporary limits on single carriageway roads don't carry points, unlike dual and motorways, or at least that used to be the case.

If he's got done on a 40 temporary therefore there should be a fine and no points. I was wondering if 'restricted speed limit' infered a temporary limit.

All legal limits carry points (except those on Military ground, IIRC). SC temporary restrictions will damage your licence.

I'm not familiar with restricted limit except as a limit on a restricted road as posted above. Speed limits are sometimes known as speed restrictions.

Agreed - I think it's the same thing.

And also agree that if the temporary limit is supported by a temporary Order, it carries the same penalties as a permannent limit.
