Mistake on my License Grrr!
Discussion
Hi All, I just wanted to share my experiences with you to let you know that the courts don't always get it right..
A couple of years ago I was Lasered travelling at a pretty illegal speed and the BiB took a picture of me doing so - fair cop... I did it I hold my hands up - guilty as charged.
As it was quite a bit over the limit I was required to attend the magistrates court.
I put in a guilty plea and accepted my punishment which was a 14 day ban and fairly heavy fine...
When I got my license back the following codes were hand written on it in biro - TT99, and SP30 with only one date. Previously my license was clean (last and only other offence was 3 pts in 1991).
In due course I notified my insurance company, who then loaded my premium by £700
But still I thought 'oh well, my own stupid fault for speeding'... Anyway, I recently bought a new car, and getting a quote from a new insurance company, I explained my offences and they said that TT99 was a 'Totting up' disqualification. Odd I thought, and double checked on the DVLA website - sure enough, disqualification on totting up procedure more than 12 points in 3 years!
Anyway I just called the DVLA and they have no record of this TT99... So it must have been a mistake at the court.
Now I know we all make mistakes, but this one has cost me £700 and were it not for the dilligence of my new insurance company (Thank you A-Plan, you have been very helpful) it might have continued to cost me even more...
So the moral of the story... If you get your license back CHECK and CHECK again the courts do make mistakes - I just wish I had checked before I forked out £700 smackeroonies!!!

Might be worth getting written proof from the DVLA that the totting up code was down to their negligence (sorry, 'oversight'), and forwarding a copy to your previous insurers explaning the situation. I don't suppose they will be keen to hand a bundle of cash over but it's worth a try.
May well be worth a go... Who would actually write the offence codes on your license? Would it be the court official, or would it go back to the DVLA? I'd rather tackle the DVLA over something like that than the magistrates court.
Of course when it comes to getting money back from an insurance company - well I am sure there is a stone and some blood involved somewhere.

Mistake down to the Magistrates Clerk Clerk.
As a short ban involved Driving Licence would not be sent to DVLA but returned by MC Office and returned direct after ban completed to holder.
MC Clerk would forward details of what was recorded on DL/Counterpart to DVLA so that they could update the Master DL Record of the individual.
Consider approaching MC Office to right the wrong by changing the TT99 to a BA10. You should then be able to show this to Insurance Company. Whether they give a rebate is in the lap of the Gods......

The DVLA actually told me that (according to their computer) the code on my license is an SP30 with details of the 14 day ban, so it must be the Clerk in the Magistrates court having a bad day (there were over 100 cases on the list that day, so I can see how the mistake happened if they are manually updating all the licenses)
I am going to tackle the insurance company in question tonight, but I don't hold out much hope as it's one of the big ones that puts you through to a call centre and they don't seem to be able to think outside of the box like the smaller outfits can.
Anyway lesson learned - an expensive lesson - so learned very well..!

Too many whingers on here crying cos they shouldnt have got booked at 55mph in a 50 zone its not faaaaaaair.
Totally agree, add to the list the rest of the overly oppressive crap that Mr and Mrs average have to contend with while difficult problems get brushed under the carpet. Here however we have an infallible and fair way to dish out justice to all the would-be kiddy killers! And anyway, we bend over like men for so much else we should bloody well bend over for this aswell - like men!Too many whingers on here crying cos they shouldnt have got booked at 55mph in a 50 zone its not faaaaaaair.
