Thames Valley police currently have 2 x 16 year old Community Support Officers in training who very soon will be out there with the authority to confiscate alcohol from under 18's, issue minor traffic tickets, and a multitude of other powers. Even though they are not legally old enough to drink, to drive, or to vote! Is this right?

I've seen it on the news this morning also. Quite a hardcore job to do for someone of their age & experience. I'm quite sure the other kids will tell them where to go if eg: they were asked to stop drinking in public.

It cannot be as starightforward as that. There must be something else in the mix with regards it. 16 yr old pcso's would be against the grain.

Well every army needs cannon fodder..... Theres no point an expensive/experianced PC getting stabbed/beaten up when a 16yo PCSO will do just as well at a fraction of the cost....

Apologies for quoting an unreliable news source.

Heres hoping their first job will be at the Jolly Londoner in Slough.

Absurd.

Do the Met still have 16 year old Police Cadets? I haven't seen any for years or have they just given them the same uniform so you don't notice them so much? Didn't they used to have very limited powers and have to have a "proper copper" holding their hands?

Such as?
Fiddling unemployment statistics?
Quoting an increase in police numbers "on the streets"?

Could be in relation to young males say 10-14 on an estate that need positive male involvement. Or positive male role models rather than negative ones.

I'm sure the average sink estate 10-14 year old will have the attitude 'So you're a PCSO, how cool'

The powers that be cant be that naiive, surely?

No but the approach they use may be different, for example getting them to set up local football teams, spending time with them not always in a uniform but as a bridge between them and the police.
