The French are starting to get veeerry sneaky with their new Speed Traps...

Cars parked up at the side of the roads with cameras in the boot (usually Renault Estates/MPV's and more recently cameras buil into and desguised as crash barriers!!!

I think we're going to see alot less graffitied motorway overpasses and alot more graffitied crash barriers.

What are your views on speed cameras and the likes?

Bison Futee/radar fixes plus local papers all give locations und timetables wink (In case of press it usually toward back end of paper before the sports pages start. (We buy local papers everywhere we travel. It tell us a lot about ambience/character of place we tour. It also tell us lots about prats wink

But beware - they have more unmarked "flics" on the prowl too.

They seek out seatbelt/headlight/drunk/careless offences. They also will issue on spot fine if they cop you straddling unbroken road markings on road. This recently come to light from selection of reader letters dotted over the Swiss/French local rags.

It seem foreigners are copped more than anyone else on this one. It nice little earner rolleyes apparently. rolleyes

The Swiss "majors" check it out on French gov website - "securite" something or other as not got the file to hand as I type this. Will edit as/when/if find it or remember to edit this wink It also mentioned in the Motoring section of book called "Living/Working in France by Peter Hampshire" (2007 edition updated wink) - which also listed on website for Brits as a good source. It ist. We check it.. but not worth £15 for 5 pages you need. I would go to bookseller armed with notepad/pen und just jot down the essentials on the 5 pages concerned wink (Ifpe really planning to uproot to live over there - then the book would be essential MUST HAVE for reference in my opinion. wink ) It not just this book saying so per the letters of complaint in foreign press/motoring mags either. I post to make you aware of this one as recent blurb in our press say Brits fall foul of law abroad because they not aware of such differences. It not so easy to get copies of foreign rules of road either. rolleyes It should be if EU seek to fine/penalty point foreigners back in relevant "Blighty" for them all rolleyes

I raised this with my MP last year, and actually got a response.... to say that there were no plans to provide information on differences between traffic laws across EU member states. Yet the DVLA will cooperate fully with foreign governments seeking to prosecute UK motorists for breaking local traffic laws. Nice.

probably not worth their while for such a minor infringement.

Most recent information I have is a 90 Euro fine for
165 kph in a 130 kph limit.

Seems reasonable to me. 103 mph in a 81 mph limit
was a 60 quid fine on that occasion.

It seems the French coppers aren't so speed
obsessed as the Brit coppers.

Provided you don't take the mickey and go
for a Vmax run.

I didn't see a single gendarme or speed camera on my recent holiday in France. Racked up about 900 miles on autoroutes/dualled N-roads, and spent the majority of my time with the cruise control set at 95mph.

Viamichelin's online maps actually show quite a few speed cameras on my route, but I didn't see anything and wasn't flashed. Anyway, there's still no reciprocal enforcement of speed camera infringements yet, so they'd be stuffed.

All speed cameras are evil, even in comparison to the arbitrary and oppressive laws which they mindlessly enforce.

It is your sacred duty to bring them, and those who run the rackets based on them, into disrepute and general public contempt.

They serve no good purpose and neither do the parasites who benefit from the money they extort.

France will penalty point UK drivers from 22 September 2007. As far as am aware .. on spot fines/tempo bans would be case for Switzerland/Austria/Italy/Belgium/- rest of EU for time being. (France always penalty pointed Swiss. Swiss do same to France wink. It was so when I learn to drive as 17/18 year old. Was allowed provisional training but not allowed to take test till 18 years. Current fluff in press has more to do with "harmonisation" with EU than "safety". Taking test at 18 years did not und has not prevented youthful folly rolleyes. I impinge on another thread here .. sorry. But it passing comment on political situation which ist loosely "related" wink. On this I should locate thread in question und post there that I think it more resolved by education und proper discipinary values to our young . but with my usual long winded explanation of why I think so laughrolleyespaperbag

As an aside to this though, if you got flashed on one French trip (with nothing coming of it, eg fixed camera) and then subsequently pulled on another, say, the following year, is there anyway that M.Plod could trace back to the previous flashing incident and nab you for both?

Presumably they have computers which keep these incidences on file unless they think "ah well, zut alors, it is not worth it" and cancel them off their system...

Where will these points appear? On the UK licences or on 'ghost' licences as the DVLA do here with foreign drivers who don't have a UK licence?

Motoring section of the Indie a bit back ..also repeated in Motor Section of Le Figaro (previously - which could be where Indie sourced the story). AA seem also informed me when I called them that this appear to be so per their information. This only apply to France at the moment. But it "one way agreement" with the Brits on the receiving end. I gather AA ist on the back burner stirring over the penalty or rather non penalty pointing of them foreigners over 'ere ranting I think they should be sizzling biggest frying pans over it.

Surely only a British court can disqualify a person from driving in the UK. It's not automatic disqual after 12 points, it's strictly at the court's discretion. So, if you racked up 12 points in France, how could you be disqualified here? I may be wrong, but I thought that in France you started with a certain number of points and lost those points if convicted of driving offences there. The two systems don't seem in any way compatible.
Maybe it's just b***s**t.

I got a fine through from Australia (I'm in UK)!

"Please pay by end of the month. If you wish to contest you can, but you must give an Aussie address". Eh? How would a visitor do that?

The interesting thing is that I was borrowing the car from g/f's sister. She gets the points until someone else accepts they were driving it. So if I say "I was driving, but wish to contest but have no Aussie address", that goes back to her (points + fine). I'll just pay it anyway 'cos it was me and avoiding family feuds is a good thing smile

Btw, you think the UK is strict - that was 31mph in a 30 zone at 8am on Sunday morning on a 6 lane road with noone else on it.

PS. It was a sh*t car too!

That true. In France - you start with 12 points. (It a bit like lieber JT's idea when Mad Doc und the guys ponder about fair play over on Paulie's site back in 2004. ) But the traffic offfences incur similar penalty.. so 4 speed offences = nul point = ban in France whereas UK ones add up. It get more complicated when they deal with the Swiss who have always taken greatest pleasure in zapping them French people laugh to get own back wink

But the idea ist to notify DVLA of prosecution und ask them to "pretty please" penalise them. It suit the anti-car idiots in Whitehall at the moment to agree to this. ranting

However, whilst our idiot of a Ladyman sign this.. rolleyes - he forget to negotiate that similar French idiots get done by scammers ranting

(Of course.. if proper trafpol cops them.. they spend night in cells. They get fine -possible short ban as regards driving here. That has always been reciprocal but not recorded on driving licence history (unless Swiss v French/French v Swiss und now French v UK per press releases. rolleyesranting)

But what worry me more.. the lack of information as regards those laws to UK drivers who travel to France. rolleyes (or anywhere in EU for that matter.)

If you are going to penalise across EU .. then system must be standardised und all in EU made aware of the laws or culture of driving in whichever member state. rolleyes That my opinion. I think that only possible path to justice und fair play here wink

Love the ladyman reference. Hope you mean Chirac rather than Sarkozy!

I have been flashed in Germany no end, and never heard a thing. Spain on the other hand, can be very strict as I'm sure you all know.

Does anyone know if you can use GPS camera detectors (not laser detectros, I know they are illegal in much of the EU) and if you can get ones which cover Europe? Tom tom has some locations but not up to date information.
