Real BIG brother watching Sheffield

BEWARE drivers in Sheffield, if you're thinking of sneaking through a bus gate DON'T. The council are now taking still pictures from the CCTV cameras to catch offenders.
I didn't think this was legal but this may be why the council are dishing out the fines instead of the police. Anyone know if this IS legal or not?

Yes, its legal. The Government has introduced legislation which enables many local authorites to enforce bus gates / lanes.Edited by SS2. on Thursday 23 August 08:17

Why would you do this if you aren't a bus?
Do you drive down the hard shoulder on a Motorway in traffic jams as well?
Have you ever sampled the delights of the road system in Sheffield? Your post suggests that you have not. The actions suggested by the OP in the context of Sheffield is nothing like using the hard shoulder on a motorway, which is of course stupid.Do you drive down the hard shoulder on a Motorway in traffic jams as well?

I guess people in Sheffield need to use whatever lane is available to escape the attentions of the local underclasses?

I do this all the time in Islington and Camden as they have these ridiculous devices in streets that are too narrow with the result that fitting a car through the non-bus part means slowing to below 5 mph to avoid kerbing a wheel as you pass through with an inch or two of clearance either side. That's on the easy ones. The ones on angled junctions are just impossible to drive through without kerbing a wheel.

the roundabout north of swfc ground wtf, driving on the tramlines kin 'ell (nice little sign slippery when wet - no shit) crawling up the hill to grenoside why 30 what is wrong with 40 or even 50 for all of it? traffic lights that let two or three cars through or one if drippy draws fails to get a grip.

i did last week why is rivlein(??) valley road 30 and 40 in countyside
Rivelin; 30 by the park because of the kiddie winks, the rest out to the A57 is because there have been a lot of accidents. The fact that as far as I can tell the accidents have mostly been ill-judged overtakes because of people travelling too slowly, and there being no run-off available because of the trees, seems to have escaped TPTB who are, of course, morons.Bing o said:

Definately NOT, but i can understand why people do go through busgates, especially in Sheffield town centre, you can get into the centre but it feels like you can't get out without doing 14 laps of the centre. Do you drive down the hard shoulder on a Motorway in traffic jams as well?
I tried to put this on as a warning to people to save someone some hassle or money and i get abuse. Cheers.

1) Why non-buses would try and use a bus lane
2) Why disobey a bus lane when you wouldn't dream of ignoring the hard shoulder.
I don't see how that classes itself as abuse?

1) When the bus lane is empty, and the other lane is chocker, to try to ease congestion.
2) Because a hard shoulder is there for safety, a bus lane is there to disrupt the flow of most people's movement, whilst allowing a small number of (mostly empty) dirty buses to pass, once every five minutes, before pulling (halfway) into a bus stop further up the road where there is no bus lane and further blocking the flow of traffic

They're not really law abiding if they are illegally driving through bus lanes are they. You've made it crystal clear that you're quite happy with all the nasty, overzealous, unreasonable restrictions, penalties and fines that motorists are currently being subjected to for political and financial reasons. That doesn't mean that everyone is, or that everyone equates driving in bus lanes to (say) shoplifting like you seem to.
Many people who fall foul of the tax-collecting will indeed be generally law-abiding, because the system is geared towards catching out decent people who register their cars etc and occasionally commit trivial contraventions of an ever-growing list of rules. How about telling us why you're so in favour of all this draconian enforcement, instead of constantly saying "But it's illegal and that's all there is to it"?
And please could you state whether you do, or ever have done, worked for any government or government-related organisation or contractor?

If I shoot somebody then I expect the punishment to be a bit different to the punishment for using a bus lane, but there needs to be some kind of punishment or most people would use it. There’s no reason to halt enforcement of motoring offences just because someone’s been shot.
Calling enforcement fines “tax collecting” is just ranting. I don’t think I’ve ever said "But it's illegal and that's all there is to it", it doesn’t sound like me. There’s usually a reason for a law. Bus lanes are there to keep roads clear so the buses can run on time. If drivers ignore them then they get clogged and the bus can’t get through. If you’re a bus hater then you’ll say who cares.
Hand on heart, I never have.

In the meantime, very petty offences, like for example, using a bus lane, or dropping a fag butt on the ground, although not really acceptable, should not merit the same, if not higher fines (in some cases), of someone who has just threatened and burgled 87 year old Mrs. Jones.
The 'generally' law abiding people will always be quick to pay any fine, whether morally right or not, the thug is a much different proposition - this is why we will see 'smoking police' or similar come down like a ton of bricks on a lone female of old guy, or even a lone woman eating an apple in her car, whilst at the same time, ignore the 'real' parasites of society because they know they'd get a good kicking - so I see a lot of these new petty laws nothing more than cowardice because our 'leaders' cannot or will not police our society fairly.
I don’t know about you, but I’d much prefer Police resources channeled into ‘no-go’ areas, tacking ‘real’ crime and protecting ‘US’, rather than get the feeling we’re here to be fleeced at any opportunity. But that’s just me…

Edited for accuracy.I don't know many people who are employed in important roles that travel by bus.
Getting Kevin Charver to the dole office in a timely fashion at the expense of taking up road space is very misguided.
