Guy tried to kill me...
Discussion
I've posted this in the Elise section, but following other similar posts, I thought I'd put it here too...
Coming back from the coast on monday, we get to the road that runs between Otford and Eynesford in Kent, which begins at Otford as a 40mph road, then becomes NSL.
In front of me is a new passat, and in front of him, an old Merc. When the black andwhite signs come up, the Merc sticks to 39mph, and the passat doesn't seem interested in going any quicker, as he's leaving a big gap. At the first opportunity, I nip past the passat, but then I see a car approaching on the other carriageway, clearly motoring. I could have passed the Merc, but I decided it would not be a safe manouvre, and it's not right to scare the oncoming car, and my passenger. So I indicate left, to slot into the gap between the passat and merc. Now, no prizes for guessing what happens next - numpty in the passat floors it and closes up to the merc's backside, so I have to force my way in, for which I get flashed lights, and the finger from passat man...
so let's sit back and look at this - I am entitled to travel at the NSL, the white lines are broken, so I am entitled to overtake - I try and do this as safely as possible, but because passat man doesn't like it, he feels he has the right to try to kill me, my passenger, and potentially the innocent driver of the approaching vehicle AND DESPITE THIS HE BELIEVES HE HAS THE MORAL HIGH-GROUND TO FLASH HIS LIGHTS AT ME!!!
This is why, despite owning 'quick' cars for the last 6 years, I rarely pass people - just too many idiots with a chip on their shoulders...

Agreed - it's often better to try and do all or none, rather than "filter" through slower moving traffic. Why people do this I don't know - you wouldn't try and push someone off a cliff, so why try and force them into oncoming traffic.
But he didn't speed so that's ok.
Just be grateful that he is the one with the micro penis and the life that didn't turn out quite as well as he would have liked!

Its quite simple. These people are lacking in basic intelligence. You have to view them with the same attitude as you would view chimpanzees in the zoo.
It sounds in this case like the only difference between a chimp and the Passat driver is the latters lack of opposing thumbs.

In retrospect, I should have done, but as soon as the road opened up again, I was past the Merc (who, incidently, despite his sedate driving, made no fuss about me going past him) so I couldn't see his plate...Alan
This exact same incident happened to me between Craven Arms and Newtown on Sunday.
Me third in line, car in front not bothering to overtake, car in front of that cruising at 50.
I go for the overtake and lo and behold car in front accelerates with me (or tries to) and squeezes up to the car at front of the line... I had to force my way back in. Cue loads of hand gestures from the guy driving (he was about 50)!
The worst thing was he had his wife in the passenger seat and an elderly relative (OAP) in the back seat!
Absolutely bizarre behaviour.

Similar thing happened to me this weekend, taking the A697 from the A1 towards Wooler, NSL road, four cars in front headed by a crappy old white Ford Escort doing c45mph. All bunched up and no attempts to overtake, came to a long straight stretch, pulled out, road clear so proceeded to overtake all 4 at once. W
r in the Escort speeds up as I draw level, luckily I have about double the BHP of his rust bucket so I boot it, pass him and pull in safely. Slow back down to the NSL and the W
r returns to his c45mph and recedes into the distance behind me.
Why do they do this

Thinking about it, would there be a market for an "always on" back and front car CCTV system to record these idiots and potentially be used as evidence.
IMHO such an act is Dangerous Driving at the very least, though they should call it attempted murder as forcing traffic out into a head-on 100mph plus crash is nothing less, surely.
But no, the feckless, the incapable, the incompetent and the dangerous continue to drift by the cameras unnoticed and undetected...

i hate this which is why I avoid the overtaking now. My other hate is when people cant keep to their lane on a roundabout when going straight! Keep to the left if you are in the left lane dont swerve into the right lane halfway through! had some dumbass jag do this yeasterday nearly went into me!

Because, for some reason, people in this country have a ridiculous inferiority complex and can't abide the thought of anyone bettering them, it's why your nice car will be scratched, why people won't merge in turn and why someone would rather cause a fatal accident than have someone overtake them

Happens all the time now. People get really snotty about "their" place in the queue, even if they're not using the space themselves, or even wanting to travel as fast as the car overtaking them. The one I see a lot is when a car cuts me up (they do that a lot around here, too), so if the road is obviously clear I maintain my speed and go round them. Except half the time, they boot it in second to try to stop me getting back in. When I do complete the overtake, they drop back at an estimated 40 or so.

And all because we have policing by camera these days. The prats' behaviour is getting worse, and it's all going completely uncorrected.
Dreadful but alas, an all too familiar tale.
It's got to the stage where smooth and uneventful progress now requires an overly developed application of defensive driving.
I find completely unnecessary, friendly acknowledgements and gestures in the direction of pedestrians, horseriders, Toldeo folk, young men wearing vests and other socialists a near perfect formula for ensuring little if any desire on behalf of the masses to revolt.
Also, travelling outside of the more obvious hours helps reduce your TEP (Time Exposed to Peasantry.)
To vermin like this, chairs and seating posture would be unkown bedfellows.
The 1.9TDi really has spawned a very particular breed...

Spot-on observation.
This annoys me as it rules out so many good opportunities for progress - not only do you need to be able to pass all the cars in the queue in a single step as they're usually too damn close to each other, but you also need to have an extra margin on top of that to cover the car(s) you're trying to overtake speeding up, and more disturbingly the chance of an oncoming driver also ramming their foot to the floor to try and prove whatever point they're trying to prove.
It's a shame that in between their "paedophiles are hiding in your kitchen cupboard! In your cupboard" and "your neighbour's teenage children will shoot you in the head and steal your car!" fear-o-thons, the media have never gone in for the (probably more true) "the guy in the other car is a maniac with a machete in the passenger footwell" angle, which would surely reduce the occurence of needless and aggressive driving moves from the general public.
Of course, using newspaper-induced panic as a tool for good probably breaks some kind of charter or something.

Mine's only a 2.2HDi but I still enjoy overtaking these numpties who seem to think NSL means 50!I'd never speed up if someone is attempting to overtake me, even if they are over the NSL, and if it helps them I sometimes slow down slightly and pull towards the left!
