Question about - Non traffic stop
Discussion
Just thought I would see if I could contest this
I was on my way to work the other day at 05:00 when I was pulled in by a normal police man. (He was parked in a bus stop and waved me in). He was doing checks on tyres, so he went round checked all the tyres and they were all fine and I was on my way.
Afterwards I was wondering if it was right that a normal policeman i.e. not a traffic cop could check these things. Also in the manner he pulled me in, do you not have to have a reason to pull people in! Other than being bored on a nightshift.
Just wondered what people thought!

A constable in uniform can require a vehicle to stop, failing to do so is an offence.
There need not be a reason for the stop.
He is checking tyres on vehicles, yours were obviously ok. But what about those whos are not and may be in a dangerous condition???
Any Police Officer can require you to stop and check the condition of your vehicle and deal with any offences accordingly.
What is the problem with this if it is to check the condition of vehicles??
How long did the stop take?

Stop didn't take long 2 mins if that, I have a friend that is a traffic cop and at times he is the only one on in West Cumbria which covers a massive area. Yet the standard of driving in this country is falling dramatically. One of my pet hates is silver tops, or OAPs driving. Mainly driving along a main road 60 speed limit, you round a bend and there is a old guy doing 28mph. I wasn't speeding only doing 50 cause I had just pulled out but this guy travelled at less than 30mph for over 4 miles!I pulled up beside him in a car park and he got out and no word of a lie got his zimmer frame out to walk to the shop!!!
Tractors are another one, they think they own the road, they normally have some jumped up teenager driving them, with a trailer that does not look safe with no working lights or number plate, covering the road in mud and other bits of rubbish and drive along with a mile of traffic behind them!
People ask why so many britains left the country last year I think the roads and cost of driving is a big factor, petrol, road tax, congestion charge. Its all a big con!!

If it was only 2 mins then i dont see the problem with tyre checks. There are MANY out there with defective tyres and sometimes this is the only way to get them sorted and get the message that we will be checking.
If you cant be arsed to pay to put new tyres on the car what else cant you be arsed to pay for?

An officer doing what he is paid to do?
I don't see a problem with being pulled in. Just think.... at that time in the morning some spotty oik might have taken your beloved TVR out of the garage and taken it for a spin before burning it out in a field on the outskirts of the town.
I say nice one Policeman as if it was a spotty oik that had knocked your car then you would be a happy bunny for the police to pull him in.
It is a fine balance against being a law abiding citizen being pulled in and being "clean" but then there will be the time when there are people with no road tax etc that need sorting out.
The police are just doing there job and the same way that some people complain about I.D. cards and their civil liberties well my thoughts are that if you have nothing to hide then what is the problem.
Also if you where driving the TVR at the time then maybe the Police Officer just wanted a look and fare comment!
Ramble over!
Mark.

Fine and well but tell that to my cousin whos dad was murdered a few back, police response was over 20 mins in the middle of coventry. The call was placed during the attack, pehaps if we had more traffic cops doing traffic jobs then we could free up the normal plod??
If they had been called to a murder/serious assault in progress, no doubt they would have left immediately, tyres checked or not. It's not a case of I've started so I'll finish. Many a time I've broken off from a traffic stop to something I considered more important. vonhosen said:

Many a time I've broken off from a traffic stop to something I considered more important. There isn't a BIB I work with who would 'stay till the jobs done' if an immediate comes over the air. I think if you did you'd be asked some very awkward questions and given a booting by the gaffer.

True, but it stinks of plod with nothing better to do and with a superiority complex! Forgot to say the bus had to pull up behind me to wait for me to move off!
Rubbish. Plod is duty bound to preserve life. Plenty of dangerous vehicles result in deaths each year. I rarely worry about other vehicles - its other drivers that I'm concentrating on.

It's the sort of Policing most people want to see. Getting out and interacting with folk. Not being slave to a stupid radio passing out stupid time-wasting incidents called in by the non-working non-tax paying dregs of society, which amounts to 99% of Police time.
I think the general message that has been coming over is that the sort of Policing most people want to see is dealing with theft and violence yet the common perception is this is not a high priority while the easy pickings from motoring misdemeanours is very high on the list.Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
