If he's a newish driver and they give him six points, doesn't he have to re-sit his test???
First 2 years of holding a license only so no, assuming he hasn't only just regained his license after a disqualification.

Because he was driving someone else car as insurance for himself is too expensive.

i was informed in my case that as i was in excess of 26mph over the posted limit, 101mph on the M4, the COFP would not be offered and the case would go to court

Ouch. I would say I hope he has now learnt his lesson.. If not, he'll be banned within 3 weeks.

So what does calling him a muppet suggest or imply?, and where did you mention he was riding a motorbike, you asked the question "what is likely", I asked the question "was he insured", then you start with the insults.

Have a nice day buddy.

A long long time ago, i was also caught at 73 in 40 (dual carriageway late at night but no matter, it was a fair cop and pretty stupid). I went to court, pleaded my guilt but i did have a letter from work due to being an engineer and always travelling the country to different sites which would have meant if i lost the car, i lost the job.

Magistrate gave me a stern ticking off followed by 5 points and a 250 quid fine.

30 over any limit usually means a ban doesn't it?

60 in a 30, 70 in a 40, 100 in a 70 ...

Or does that not always apply?

It's the least he deserves...

The magistrates guidelines for 25-35mph over the limit in a 40 is a 6 points or 14-56 day ban.

In a sense he was lucky as I am guessing that over 35mph over is definate ban territory.

If he can plead well he may get 6 points, however I would say a short ban is the more likely outcome I am afraid.

the fact he was on a bike is irrelevant hence not mentioned ,i called him a muppet because he was caught doing 75 in a 40 (pretty mild i think) i didn't start with the insults until you started filling in details of your own imagination .
have a nice day also .

Actually, OP, the point you seem to be (wilfully?) missing is that 75 in a 40 is not really all that mild at all. Your son is, at best, an idiot for failing to notice the speed limit and thus landing himself in expensive trouble - I don't know whether the road and circumstances would've been safe to drive at that speed on or not, but there aren't many decent quality stretches of road with the limit that low on them.
