Chaps - need some guidance. A friend was doing a considerable number of leptons along a long straight A road. Just as he's overtaking a few cars he spots a Scam Van on the side of the road...probably about 500 yards away...brakes sharply and pulls in behind the two cars he was about to overtake.

He thinks he was got...but does anyone know how far away in practise (as opposed to in theory) the car is away from them when they normally get the picture with the speed measurement on it?

Cheers,
J.

The LTI 20-20, the weapon of choice for Camera vans is certified, and claimed to be accurate, up to 1000 meters.

Isn't there something in the guidelines stopping them from targetting through other vehicles/stuff?

Hard to imagine they can get a reliable figure like that, but I guess when you're talking ££££s any figure >60mph will do nicely, provided your car was capable of doing that speed.

Hi Supermono - We can only hope there are such rules, yes. Sadly in this case, the car concerned was more than capable of that speed.

Thanks for the replies guys...I guess we'll have to wait and see if the postman brings anything.

Cheers,
J.

Trouble was the writer loses you when he writes things like this:-

"I’m already concentrating really hard on trying not to say thank you at zebra crossings. Yesterday I was, like, that close to just stepping out and demanding the traffic halt for me"

There are many ways to see if you can get away with it. First they have to produce a camara that has been calibrated that day, then take a picture. if it has not been calibrated, the picture is invalid as the camara cannot be seen to be accurate. you should hear from plod awithin 7 days of the incident. if so, the tolarances are 10% plus 2 mph. so, 35 in a 30, 57 in a 50 and so on. Hope this helps

A few inaccuracies there jerrytigger:

The camera doesn't get CALIBRATED daily (but it should be checked).

NIP has to be [can of worms]served [/can of worms] on the registered keeper within 14 days of the ALLEGED offence (not including date of alleged offence itself).

The tolerances you quote are ACPO enforcement guidelines, but there are some that say they've been done for less.

I got done at 800 metres + on the A14. It was clearly on a good tripod, completely stable image and fixed on me within a second as I appeared in view around the corner. They then smoothly panned the picture as the car came towards them so that I could clearly be seen as the driver and also the car/reg no. A good bit of camera work

No doubt at all - it was a fair cop guv, but society is to blame.

Wow you mean you managed to appear in their film for THAT LONG before you flew out of control and crashed into a fireball? Are you some sort of stunt driver?

Chap, you were being helpful but doing yourself down by talking about "fair cop" etc. Sorry, I was just talking about how trivial "speeding" is 99.9999999% of the time...

The alowed limits are NOT 10% plus two. That is cr@p. I was done for doing 32mph in a 30 zone. Admittidely that was in wales where the chief boss man is 'keen' to say the least.
I held my hands up, admitted i was a dangerous driver driving at insane speeds intentionally just for the adrenaline rush , and they offered me a course - which I took.

Understood - the fair cop bit was supposed to be tongue in cheek.

A scamera in that position simply reels them in as they come around the corner. Must have made a fortune that day, and I thought I knew where they all were on that road. Wrong!

It is stated that there should be only one vehicle - the target vehicle - within the crosshair void. However, even that method is flawed.
