Hired Vehicles
Discussion
You hire a car. The car goes back. Three months pass and you hire again. Hire company still have your card details 'on file' in case a fine popped up... so they can authorise payment of said fine / charge??
I'll decide if, how or when I pay thanks very much. Aren't they required to disclose who the vehicle was rented to on the day?
What's this about keeping your card details>?>?

Did you check the smallprint before you signed for the van?
Could possibly be in there I guess.
Van? Car. I did have a friendly discussion with hire company. I don't understand why they'd get involved when there is a simple requirement to pass on the details of the hirer. Or is this just another way to secure payment rather than chase someone who is likely to be of 'NFA'?Could possibly be in there I guess.
Tangent alert!
Hotels will charge your credit card when you arrive and factor in meal costs and full mini-bar usage so they are covered in case you do a runner.
Has happened that someone has decided they dont like the place and, moving on without incurring any charges whatsoever, have been refused by another hotel since they are now maxed out.

Hmmmm. Tangerine of a tangent. Hotels will charge your credit card when you arrive and factor in meal costs and full mini-bar usage so they are covered in case you do a runner.

Read the small print, its in there.
Hire company keeps your card details "just in case". If there is any damage ( however minor )to the car ( unless you have a paid through the nose for their insurence ) it will be on your card. This has recently happened to a friend of mine.
If any NIP comes through, they will not get involved, just pass your details on ( and charge your credit card £25 admin fee for the privilage ). This has happened to me. As the NIP related to a different make & colour of car, in a different part of the country, I eventualy, after lots of hassle, was told that no further action would be taken. After lots more hassle, I even got the hire company to refund the charge, but with hindsight, it would have been easier just to accept the £25 ( on the company credit card after all ) and do without all the grief.
The only way round this that I can see is to cancel your credit card as soon as you return a hire car. Not practical in my profesion, as it involves lots of car hire. I expect that there would be something in the credit card small print as well ( sayin that if any more charges come through, you still have to pay ), but I have not checked that out.
Hotels are just as bad in exactly the same way, so don't get me started on them....

But it should also be wiped after three months. Plenty of time for any fines. Damage is a separate issue that is agreed / decided on the day more or less.
I don't agree with the extended retention of details.
I also don't like car hire companies keeping my details and paying fines etc on my behalf without asking so I got a pre-paid mastercard. I put the amount on that the hire or whatever will cost and use that card. Once they have been paid I clear any excess back off the card. Keeps my proper credit cards safe from their shenanigans.
