Morning all - well I have had my windows tinted and my german plates on for a 1000 miles and only drove past a few police. A few have had a second look but one had someone in the back already.

I was wondering what are the chances or a policeman seeing them and turning round to "give chase" and pull me? Would they actually be that bothered?

I am in the met police area if it makes much difference?

Scott

p.s I drive rather normal so not to attract attention

Number plates would be illegal if German style so that would get you a pull and tinted windows if they do not let in enough light is also serious and would lead to more than just a pull.

Yeah the windows get a £30 fine but I usually drive around with them down hoping to not attract too much attention.

I keep the legal plates in the car so should the time arise - be polite and offer to change on the scene.

So the tints are illegal, meaning that they could compromise your night time vision, and you have illegal plates?

Welcome to S,P&L, you'll get on well here....

Illegally tinted windows are illegal for a reason, same as you shouldn't drive in sunglasses at night - how can you drive safely if you can't see properly?

They aren't just illegal because they make you look like a wannabe pimp/gangsta/prem footballer.

Do not be shocked though to have them siezed and get a fine for them. Not saying you will but that could be the outcome.

My apologies - I didnt realise that driving in sunglasses at night is an offence?

I did not get the windows tinted to make me look like pimp etc. I got them because in the sun the car does not get as hot (honest guv'nor)!

So you could have saved a fortune on tints and just driven down with the windows open. Kept cool and stayed legal too!

Seriously, I would think that dodgy plates and tints are pretty likely to get you a pull at some stage. I always work on the basis that it's best not to give plod such an obvious temptation.

i know someone who recently recieved 3 points and a fine for having tinted windows but then because of the big 'max power' type scene here the police are hard on people for driving/vehicle offences.

I always thought German plates were rather fugly.

And why do you want people to think there is a German in the car anyway?

Do you like not being let out of junctions or something?

Driving a BMW does that anyway (double with gangsta tints) - hard to see someone's plates when they are side onto you....

That's why you see them steaming down the OSL at many a lepton, trying to make up for the 25 minutes spent trying to turn right out of a cul-de-sac.

Depends on level of tint, it may not be a £30 fine.

They could be dangerous condition (endorseable offence) & qualify for a PG9.

unsure what you mean by dangerous condition vanhosen?

I was pulled about 3 years ago having fog lights on (yes I know) loud BIB attracting exhaust and Limo tinted windows - I was pulled by essex traffic police and got fined £30 - the tints let through 2% light

These are noticably lighter? Any ideas? Thanks

A lot of people who have illegal tints aren't prosecuted for the tint offence (non endorseable), but for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition (endorseable), because of the compromised vision. Some times a PG9 is issued at the same time as well, which strictly prohibits you from driving the vehicle until the defect is repaired (you would have to get it lifted or repair on site). If you do drive with a PG9 in force, you'll not only be reported for a second dangerous condition offence but an extra of breaching the PG9 restriction.

Under the new Fraud act you could be arrested for displaying German plates, because you are exposing someone to a possible loss, parking fees, charges etc. I would in the Met Area and have given out numerous tickets for "German" plates.

Are you allowed to wind the windows down & disable the switch to get home? They'll pass an MOT like that....
