Day's volunteering
Discussion
I'm interested in doing a days volunteer work involving the criminal justice system (ideally emergency services based) - does anyone know of anything I could get involved with?
I want to get a different view on life compared to my day to day office environment.
Thanks in advance to any BiB that may know how I could help out of a day...

Given my day to day of house/train/office/winebar/train/home, a taste of reality would be welcome

You can volunteer to inspect Police cells for human rights abuse.
My local cop shop are looking for volunteers. It's only a few times a year though.
How does that work? My local cop shop are looking for volunteers. It's only a few times a year though.
I've ten years practical business experience, plus a bloody minded attitude to asking why people do things - does that help?

I hear you get to act as if you have balls the size of watermelons and whenever you feel that someone has got the better of you tell them that you can 'nick' them for something you really know nothing about.

Applications are usually through the Police Authority for the force you are interested in visiting.

Seriously though custody visitor is a role where you can make a difference.
I saw ours as allies in the struggle for decent working conditions
How many days do you have to do - I only have to do two a year, but if it's an interesting role, I could do more I suppose.I saw ours as allies in the struggle for decent working conditions

I spent a couple of weeks with a local law firm when I was at school - was quite fun meeting the local perps - favourite was a woman who got wedged in a shopping trolley and pushed down a steep hill towards a main road by her husband!
This is probably not what you had in mind, but I help five and six year olds learn how to cross the road safely. I got into it as my children's school was asking for volunteers. When I attended I was surprised to find, not just parents like myself, but participants from local businesses.
It is very satisfying and rewarding and the drop in KSI amongst children since the schemes were introduced speaks volumes for its effectiveness.
You will also find it is extremely challenging trying to hold the attention of five and six year olds. It gives you a good insight into adult behaviour. Many people don't change much and it adds weight to the argument that many adults are just children in bigger bodies.
Contact your local council and education authority if you are interested.

If they complain enough times that conditions are bad, things tend to get done eventually.
In tems of conditions for the detainees there was rarely any thing wrong. In terms of the working conditions for the staff, these were often deplorable, and the CV's often said so.
