Numpties own self righteous speed limit sign (40MPH in NSL)
Discussion
How can I check the correct (official) speed limit for a country road?
The road in question is Gardeners lane, near Romsey, which is a twisty country road that makes for a good shortcut (providing I don't get caught behind a numpty). the lane runs between a dual carraigeway (NSL) and an A road that is also NSL.
There are no signposts at either end of the Gradeners Lane to indicate a speed change, no street lamps and no repeaters. Until recently there were no signposts at all......
Over the weekend a white, square plastic signpost indicating 40 MPH (red circle with black 40) has appeared about 300 meters from the dual carraigeway end of the lane attached to a telegraph post.
Is this a real sign or a a home made one by some numpty who wants all the traffic to slow doen.
If it is homemade how to I go about getting it removed? Who do I report to? If it stays I am sure people will obey it.

One side of road, or both sides? Anything on the back?
Although tbh if its made from plastic I'd discount it anyway.
One side only - looks very homemade but it is too far up the lamppost to remove without a ladder.....Although tbh if its made from plastic I'd discount it anyway.
Is it the highways agency that is repsonsible?
If (as I beleive) the sign is not official, then it should be removed and the perpetrators should get a stern talking to...
Contact your local highways dept through the council. If it is illegal they will remove.
If there are no signs to indicate a change of speed then it should be NSL. If I recall correctly if the street lights are 182.88 metres apart or less then it will be a 30.
Now where's that geeky smilie.

Highways agency if a trunk road, local authority if not. Try local Plod and ask who is responsible for the illegal signage...
With a bit of luck Plod will give the perpetrator a good bollocking, or preferably a prosecution for littering if it is an unauthorised sign. It certainly doesn't sound very official.Best wishes all,
Dave.
Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984 S.64(4):
"Traffic signs, whether temporary or permanent, may not be placed on or near a road unless the person placing them is specifically authorised to do so. Among those authorised are:
1)The Local Traffic Authority
2)A constable or other person authorised by the chief officer of police - under certain circumstances.
3)Any other person - in respect of a temporary obstruction."
If the sign is what you suspect it is it does not have any legal effect and it may well be that the person placing it has committed an offence contrary to the above.

There was a numpy on the local news not so long ago who was applauded for making a fake gatso out of cardboard and erecting it on a busy road outside his home!
Absolute berk! I hope he clubbed with it.
I saw that.Absolute berk! I hope he clubbed with it.
What is more sad that the actions of these people are completely based on the propaganda given to them.
I watched a programme last night about teams of people in Zimbabwe who pretty much worship Mugabe and were basically happy to violently keep him in power despite 4000% inflation and 80% unemployment...
I have tried calling:
Local Council
Local Highways Department
Local Police
None of them are interested.
Had another look - the sign is defintely homemade.
Sure enough I was sat behind someone this morning who when spotting the sign immediately slowed to about 35MPH for the rest of the road (about 2 miles....)

There was a guy in the Harrogate/Knaresborough area two or three years ago who made his own speed camera at a cost of several thousand pounds - and apparently it worked - but having set it up outisde his house it was reported that North Yorkshire Police (to their great credit) gave him a bollocking and made him take it down again. Absolute berk! I hope he clubbed with it.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
