Taxi's and child restraints
Discussion
[quote]Age-height: Child from 3rd birthday up to 135cms in height (approx 4' 5"
(or 12th birthday whichever they reach first)
Rear seatbelt: Where seat belts are fitted, the correct child restraint MUST be used. The child must use adult belt if the correct child restraint is not available as follows:
- in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle; or
- for a short distance in an unexpected necessity; or
- two occupied child restraints prevent fitment of a third.
A child 3 years and over may travel unrestrained in the rear seat of a vehicle if seat belts are not fitted in the rear.

Why is it safe not not have a child seat in a car but it is safe in a Taxi?
I'm sorry but i can understand a bus as it has a greater potential energy therefore you wouldnt fly out your seat, but surley a taxi is the same as a car?

The legislation has been put in place to reduce injuries to children by the increased use of child seats. It accepts that in some cases this may not be practical ie when using a taxi. It is not to suggest that Taxis are any more crashworthy than a normal passenger car.
Also, you will probably find that most children are injured in their parents own vehicles. I don't have the statistics to hand to show this.
Interestingly, did you know that statistically most accidents happen within a two mile radius of your home address or your destination address.

Just to put that into context - I'm far more likely to have a crash when I'm driving than as a passenger, is it because I'm the worst driver in the world? No, it's because most of my journeys are done with me at the wheel - children will make the majority of their journeys in their parents car(s), therefore this is where they're most likely to be if they are in a car accident. It's just not really practical to get child seats for taxis - time to put them in and out, for the sake of such short journeys.

Sorry, could you explain this? Child seats are not fitted to busses purely on the ground of practicality. However you are MORE likely to be injured in a buss accident comapred to a car at an equivalant speed due to the amount of hard railings etc. tigger1 said:
