My best pal called me last night, to tell me his dad had been killed in an RTA.

He was driving a lorry carrying gas canisters... according to a report on the "Cambridge news" site, the canisters were empty, and some horrifying photos show the cab ablaze, but with the canisters appearing untouched on the articulated part of the vehicle.

The bit I'm trying to get my head round is... What would make a diesel cab burst into flames ?

Sorry to hear about your friend's dad. That junction must be the worst designed in the entire country and it's been the scene of just so many accidents over the years.
Don't worry, though, the new SPECS average speed cameras, recently installed at a cost of £2.5million, in that area will stop all acidents from happening!

Difficult to work out what happened from the pictures.

The armco looks damaged, as though he's hit it and carried on bending it.

He'd been driving the big tankers for that company for over 30 years, and although I think he was in his late 50's, he was no "old fogey"... or Michael Schumacher.

Bad as it sounds, I'd rather he had a heart attack, hit the barrier and went unconscious, than know what was going on.

A thoroughly nice, hard working, honest, decent man.

It looks like a tight left bend on the photo, can you really get that much speed up at that point ?

Sorry to hear about your friends Dad, Yes it is a very tight corner and its also got painted ridges and speed warning signs on the approach.

Its unlikely if he was an experienced driver that he would have read the road wrong, I can only assume the other vehicle involved caused the lorry to tip over.

Very sad that another person didn't make it home from a normal day.

I've seen one report that mentions another vehicle

And one report that doesn't.
