From looking at the junction lay out, it would appear, that the lights he drives through at 100, are to allow the traffic on the far side of the duel carriageway to cross the lane he is in. There is no on coming traffic so safe to cross, it is also stated in the commentary, that the driver knows the lay out of the road. I would consider it safe at what I saw

would be concerned with the amount of debris that collects there damaging a tyre especially if you're in pursuit

I'm curious to know why you think it was nonsense?

Depends, most hatched areas aren't that bad in that respect. Dual carriageways tend to be worse than single carriageway, but on duals I wouldn't be using them generally. The debris is usually quite visible & you can incorporate that in your assessment of viability.

Plod - you should know that Joe Public doing 172mph in a car that he does not own, nor have consent to use, is far far safer than a highly trained public servant doing 130 - have you learnt nothing on PH rolleyes

For everyone of these posts, I gain respect for the BiB.

nonsense - basically there was no comparison of driving style - track vs police

I can't see that driving through any junction at 100mph is safe - even i slow down at lights even when they're green when driving at speed.

VBH only beat the officer by 4 secs - but then VBH ain't the quickest driver around Tif would of probably of taken another 3 - 4 secs off it and that's a hell of lot quicker.

It was a stupid piece - i would of rather seen more of what was involved in the police training - but then 5th gear is bloody awful

I heard the Chief Inspector commenting after that conviction that at 172mph the driver would take 4-5 secs to react and slow down and that it would take over 500meters to come to halt or words to that effect

So at 130mph in a heavier, non high performance car - i'm guessing the reaction time would be the same ?

And no i'm not defending the guy smile

One is trained the other isn't.

I read something about tennis players and how they could return serves at 120mph plus. It turned out that the human body isn't quick enough to react to the sight and movement of the ball alone - top professionals can pick where a serve is going from how the opponents foot is placed, the angle of their shoulders etc.

Point being, that with proper training, a professional driver will be sharper than an amateur.

Also, I doubt that the Porker had blues and twos on either...

That doesn't make it right, even if he had've been.

Re Fifth Gear, I was waiting to see VBH chasing Tom Ford around Hull city centre on a Sunday night vs the copper doing the same...

You never see vicky driving against Tiff or Jason, she just couldn't compete. She calls herself a racing driver; rubbish, she's done a bit of racing, but she's more presenter than racer.

I know the road very well, it was Annesley by-Pass near Hucknall, they showed it both ways, the bit where he hit a frankly pants 130 is arrow straight and down hill, the lights are a new feature to try and slow down the road a little, you can turn across from the other direction but it's a very quiet junction and you can see quite well a year ago the layout was the same but there were no lights so not a great deal more dangerious than it was then.

heres the road the junction is the yellow road leading to Hayes Farm. wink

I just watched that again on youtube. Really good, I thought.

I did laugh when the police driver said in his commentary whilst going round the racetrack - as the only car on the track: "Checking my nearside mirror, checking it's safe to exit the apex".

I know he was only making a point, but I chuckled.
