So... I have been given a PG9 (Prohibition notice) for my car as my front windows are excessively tinted. What I need to know is can I get away with rolling the front two windows down, taking the fuse out and going to get it tested as i'm pretty sure you don't have to have side windows by law?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Remember, the main reason for the no-dark tints is so that an armed criminal cannot hide behind them in the front seat of the car.

They must always sit in the back of the car if they are armed - where the tints would be legal.

You may laugh, but that's one of the reasons for "nothing past 30%" tint in front windows. The other one is common sense - ie: loss of visibility at night.

Is your car a BMW by any chance?

Yep, I'm sure you can get away with thatyes

And if you remove the Cat, but refuse to start the engine at MOT time it should pass that as well

But that would be daft as you need the engine running to drive... you don't need windows to drive do you!

Nope its a Clio 182, There not even that dark which is the annoying thing. I can see perfectly out of them day or night. The reading I was given was 32 if that helps?

Film, I know I can peel it off but I don't really want to, I just need to know if you need side windows as i'm sure the only legal requirement is a windscreen.

So what will you do next time you're stopped and the windows are still too dark?

Surely I would just get another PG9, If they could of given me points & a fine i'm sure they would of done.

Then they are 2-points too dark. You are only allowed 30% tint on front side windows. It's not a grey area (!), it's black & white ruling.

You may find that someone else may test them and get 28-29 readings, which thus passes.

If you do - get it in writing!!!

They may have cut you some slack, but catch you again & they won't.

Maybe i'll try taking it up there as it is then and hopefully get a different reading. Just really need to know where I stand on the no window front, Can't find any info on it at all.

Not sure how "no windows" works with the "ability to lock and secure the vehicle" since it was designed to have windows that close being a closed cockpit vehicle.

On a serious note. You have been stopped and told your car is in a dangerous condition to drive yet you still want to drive it like that.
How stupid is that?

So why don't tossers who wear sunglasses all day & night get a PG9 as well - surely they're driving their car in a dangerous position.

I'm not a huge fan of tints myself, but how much safer is 29% to 31% light transmission - does that 2% make it instantly 'safe'?

Mine's had the same tints for 6 years (although I only bought it 5 months ago) and has been through 6 MOTs, and I've been stopped for making progress a couple of times (no points though). Not once have the tints been measured or commented on.

If it was purely a matter of making the car dangerous to drive, then surely it would not pass an MOT?

For something as simple as peeling the film off I would just remove it...you don't want to make yourself enemy number one by trying to pull a fast one.
You've got a nice car there Matt and I'm sure the tints do nothing to improve its looks, so pull them off..
I had to in my old Navara, its no big deal.

I doubt it makes much difference when its close to the limit. However whats the point of risking getting more fines, points etc when you have been told they are to dark thats all im saying. Also what about if you had an accident and the tints were believed to be the reason you pulled out and did not see a car, bike etc.

Tints are not checked as part of the mot. Therefore your car could pass an mot and still be illegal.
