Got stopped last night on the M4, just after Heston. As the cop was writing the ticket, he made a mistake on the last number of the offence code, and wrote over the number to correct it.

So now the number is not clear, it could be an 8 or even a 5!

Is the ticket still valid?

Please help!!

Its very unlikely this will invalidate it. try http://www.pepipoo.com they will be able to give you more information on the laws.

go through the NIP wizard etc on pepipoo and check the officer has done everything else to law. if he is able to make a simple mistake like writing down the wrong number hes prob got a lot of other things wrong too!!

Look at this way:

1. You don't accept because of the alteration so you don't pay the FPN or inform issuer. 28 days and not paid registered as a fine and amount increased 50%.

2. You don't accept and wish to contest and as the information on the ticket will state you have to elect a Not Guilty plea Magistrates Court trial. The summons will not show an offence code but the offence itself, Act and section contravened. Bear in mind too Court has the power to amend minor discrepancies.

Sorry but my opinion, for what it is worth, I very much doubt that your not going to get anywhere with what you state.

I'm assuming it's a standard FPN, if so regardless of which force issued it, it is likely to have a place where the offence is stated in words, and secondly where the offence code is entered. The ticket is valid if the offence wording is completed, the offence code is more of an admin thing for the central ticket office to process it onto their systems quicker.

The only official guidelines i am aware of is 'the offence must be clearly stated on the ticket'.

But is it not a fact that an incorrect FPN can be withdrawn and prosecution at a Court entered into?

Musing of course
