Just come along the A27 going towards Beddingham and to my surprise about 1 mile before the Kingston roundabout 2 new cameras have appeared about 20 yards apart, both the big yellow box ones, one looked like it was static (hidden behind an overgrown bush) then the other looked like a mobile one as it had red boxing round the base and looked like it had just been put up (Facing the same way), both same size, couldnt see any road markings!! are these live?? whats the story with having 2 so close together??

My wife told me about this today.....Cannot believe that they would put cameras there. There will be no stats to say that crashes happen there and I should know...i policed it for 3 years. its purely to make money.(which it surely will!)

I went through there today and they're not close together. (Maybe they were but they're not now). They are both on the cetral reservation watching the eastbound carriageway between Falmer and High Elms (that's the petrol station at the bottom of the hill near The Newmarket diner). The first one is now at the top of the hill just as you leave Falmer village and the second is at the bottom of the hill just before the petrol station on the left.

It does surprise me that they are positioned there, it's a pretty safe section of road and it's unusual to see people travelling really quickly there. I wonder if they are in preparation for some road works due to start there or something? They do seem to have their own power supplies (Genny's) and their bases are surrounded by temporary concrete blocks.

ETA: Oh, and BTW, it's not the "Kingston" roundabout. It is properly called the Ashcombe roundabout... because it's right next to Ashcombe House.

I dont live down there so dont know the area that well, just come though there occasionally, when i went past the petrol station, that was where both were on the central resevation very close togther, i didnt see the other one just outside Falmer village, maybe they are moving them about, did anyone see any road markings?? if not i dont see how they can be active yet, maybe it is for future road works simular to at Beddingham, thats a nightmare down there for traffic at the moment.

No road markings that I can remember seeing, and none of the customary "you are going top be screwed for the next 28weeks if you use this road" signs so no evidence of them being active and no advance warnings of future roadworks.

I'll have another look on the way through in about half an hour.

ETA: My original response seems to have been a bit terse. That was unintentional, sorry about that.

It will be interesting to see if any more pop up in the coming weeks, when i came though there yesterday there were a number of police about generally as well as a number up the A23-M23, i thought they were just having a few days catching as many people as possible, keep me posted as i only go though there occasionally and dont want to get caught out, i'm not even sure what the speed limit is along that strech, i know it drops to 50 just after the petol station (after the camera) heading in the Beddingham direction, strange also that there are no cameras in the opposite direction

The speed limit along there is NSL until just before the Ashcombe roundabout where it drops to 50. It picks up again the other side and then drops to 40 before the Southerham roundabout for the duration of the Beddingham roadworks.

I have been through from Falmer to High Elms tonight and the cameras are now quite obviously temporary. One at the top of the hill and one at the bottom as described previously. The ruler markings are now in place and there is a nice yellow sign saying that roadworks are starting there 15/10/07 for 2 weeks. There is even a tarmac layer (I can never remember their proper name) and a roller parked up near to High Elms.

Looks like it's going to be even more chaos through there for a while. So that's nice. rolleyes

Maybe, but I have never had the pleasure in over 37 years of motoring in being "awarded" any points, or donating my hard earned cash to the treasury either laugh

I might add that I do not fully agree with all limits either, but each to their own, if you choose to ignore them, expect to be parting with your cash.

Sounds like they have just done the markers and placed the cameras in the last day or so in prep for the road works which will undoubtly mean they will drop the speed limit to something daft like 40MPH and hold everyone up!!

Thanks for the update Strangely brown

If you want to have lots of fun, why not go past the cameras, say 5 times at a really fast speed, will be ever so much fun, downside is that u get to use your car after a couple of years from getting banned, only a muppet would go over the limit when they know there is a speed camera there....

No, but you would think it did by the speed people go.
It sticks to 50 ( they look like temp signs ) after the roundabout all the way to the 40 limit for the road works.

You're right... the limit would normally go back to NSL after the Ashcombe roundabout but since it is only about half a mile to the 40 limit they have simply extended the 50 to meet it with temporary signs.
