Policement, helmets and chips???
Discussion
I heard the most bizaaaare story from an ex policeman from when he qualified (20 or so years ago).
He told a story of policemen on the beat at night who bought chips from the chipshop and put the bag of chips in their helmets. When they went out on the job (as it where), the point seemed to be to see peoples' reactions to coppers who smelt of chips.
Is there even the remote possibility of this being true?

not bizarre
I actually know the policeman involved (allegedly ) but the story is a bit more mundane
On the beat having a fly sixpence worth of chips (yes it was that long ago) spots his inspector and conceals hs snack under his helmet
but was revealed by the grease running down and the steam escaping from the top of his helmet
true...

I can remember on foot patrol being caught by my Sgt seconds after just buying a bag of chips. I just had time to thrust them in my coat pocket.
It was a freezing night and he kept me talking for ages through the window of his car. Too cold for him to get out.
By the end I was half engulfed in a cloud of steam.
'Don't let your chips get cold' was his parting shot as he drove off.
My helmet actually used to contain 20 fags, matches and a piece of packing tape for opening car doors.

the guy who told the story is called Adrian Webster and is now a motivational speaker! His version has a load of them doing it to play tricks on punters!

Same tale told to me by an old chum of the days when he was a beat bobby (he retired as DSup some 10 years ago). Apocryphal or commonplace? - StreakyBert

I find that whole story very hard to believe, I mean honestly, a bobby on foot patrol, whatever next. It was a freezing night and he kept me talking for ages through the window of his car. Too cold for him to get out.

These days you cant really do it as the kebab sauce will spill and I do struggle to fold a pizza box that small BUT I can confirm that 30 years ago my father would be given all sorts of food / drink on his beat by shops etc - most of which went inside his helmet and was then consumed out of sight or saved till later! This included beer and fags but mainly pies
. Those were the days. So he keeps telling me

Slight deviation from food to actions(but this story is supposedly true) -----
Some years ago ,possibly a decade or two or more ago , in a part of the UK now known as Highland Region , a PC was talking to a group of locals( he tended to take his social duties keenly as there was little or no crime in that part of the world), his hands stuffed deeply into his uniform trouser pockets .
He was interrupted by a passing tourist asking directions to the car ferry. Without any apparent thought the PC raised his size 12 and using his toe pointed in the direction of the ferry, saying "that way sir " (or words to that effect).
Shortly afterwards the PC was promoted and the police presence increased to three . It is not known if this incident led to that or his further promotion to Inspector a few years later.

I'm missing something here, but can't work out what?
