This is the headline in a report in tonights local paper. There have been numerous complaints that dangerous cyclists are putting lives at risk because the police do not have time to stop them riding on the pavement .

A Senior Dorset Police Officer has admitted that such offences are "not a priority because they are not official Home Office performance indicators". He continues that "cycling offences do not appear in the Dorset Police control strategy either leaving little time to deal with them".

It's all about targets...they won't waste time with stuff that's not on their "to do" list..

To be fair, if that is the top policing priority in Dorset it's a very lucky county. I'd look to cut down police numbers there before targeting that sort of stuff.

Are you sure it isn't just a few old folk complaining too much?

Interesting would any officer like to oblige with a list of any other offences not covered by performance monitoring?

If it's all to do with hitting Performance Indicators (PIs) then riding on a footpath is punishable by a £30 fixed penalty. I'm sure £30 fixed penalties are PIs in most forces. It is a bit harsh for all but the most frequent offenders though in my opinion. It's a typical common sense offence. Survey each instance on it's own merits and decide if a ticket is reasonable in the circumstances.

They will perhaps get cams to nab them. There already been talk that with growing numbers of cyclists in London.. that they should wear a reg number on back of cycling vests/gilets/jackets. Failure to do so akin to not having reg plate on car. wink

whistle It will come when we priced off the roads und forced to ride bikes. After all.. they need the income from "nowty rebels" wink

Every thing is on the 'to do list'. A case of 'if its not on fire, call the police'. Is it any wonder that with so much to look after within a population, many of whom struggle to do up their shoe laces at times, that stuff like this is left to float past without being addressed?

That reminds me of the old Spike Milligna (the well-known typing error) joke: "Policemen are numbered in case they get lost!" - Streaky
