You have to wonder what is the point..other than a financial one of course.
Are they intimating that the emissions test undertaken at MOT time isn't good enough and deserves a dedicated camera to cash in on the shortfall in standards?

No, they are saying that they can come up with more reasons to fleece the motorist who needs their car to survive, and so will pay up. Hey presto, more money to spend on new LCD TVs for their offices/taxi cabs/Better biscuits in meetings etc.

I assume we all want good air quality. There's been a number on which to report smokey vehicles for some time now.

There should really only be one question regarding any new spy camera:

"How well do they burn?"

It seems that's what the cameras are trying to work out too.

How is reporting a smokey vehicle going to improve our air quality?? Can't HATO's and PCSO's deal with that anyway?

How many times have you called the number?? Can you breathe better now or haven't you called it enough yet? smile

Let's get things in proportion, cameras for emissions mean only one thing and it's definately not about air quality.

If the people are very unhappy with speed cameras and the speed kills policy, then move the cameras to traffic lights and emissions.

The IET article said said:
Operators of the largest non-compliant vehicles will have to pay a £200 daily charge to drive them within the zone, which will cover most of Greater London and operate at all times.

Is that the largest vehicles that are non-compliant or the vehicles with the largest non-compliance? Either way, it's another tax - Streaky

Wonder which piece of legislation supports this move...

Seen a new tower with cams (although they might be SPECS, but look similar to those pictured) further down the A2, around Falconwood.

Now, what's the deal with having to pay a MOT if they enforce emmissions-control on the fly?

This is bonkers.

I don't believe for one second those were emissions cameras I took pictures of...

If so - why are they in pairs? Why would htere be one set at the entrance to Blackwall tunnel and another on the exit sliproad onto the A13?

If they were purely emission related, then just the one set at the start of the tunnel would have been an adequate solution.

My gut feeling is they're a completely new type of Specs camera (there had been a suggestion that they are a trial)

Emissions for a specific vehicle can only be measured with a direct feed from the exhaust pipe. How could a camera ever do that? You can't photograph molecules of hydro-carbons floating in free air. The emissions requirements require the engine oil to be at a minimum temperature, so any roaside testing would have to measure this as well, together with an rpm reading. The emissions test is not of the 'drive-by' type, it's specific in many ways.
