I have been toying with the idea of getting a quad on the road later this year when I turn 17. I have been trying to find out If a passenger can legally be caarries as a pillion/passenger on a quad bike. No one has been able to give me a straight yes or no answer as of yet not even the police confused

Any help will be appreciated

You will have to pass your driving test as you would for a normal car (theory + practical) you are then entitled to ride/drive a quad with a pillion

Seems soft to me, at 17 unless you have experience you'll probably be quit dangerous AND a quad is more similar to a motorbike than a car, i have no idea why you don't need a valid bike license to use one on the road - not even a CBT!

Probably because, as it has 4 wheels, it is not a motorcycle. 3 wheels or less is a motorcycle.

Some useful information here

http://www.brake.org.uk/index.php?p=607

Passenger not recommended as it could effect stability and offence under Con and Use Regs - carry passenger in such a manner as likely to cause danger.

Bit about crash helmet can only be a safety recommendation as vehicle is NOT a motor cycle and you don't wear one in car do you.

A quad is nothing like a motorcycle, hence why a car licence is needed rather than a motorcycle one. Quads aren't really meant to be on the road, they are meant to be off road and as such can be quite dangerous when cornering as they are liable to tip over

Quad is driven on road license and you CAN NOT carry passengers on the road on it.

reasons being

You will no doubt, be over the weight limit and
there are no foot rests or supports for the rear passenger

If it was left to me, you would need a full car, and full bike licence to ride a trike or quad. Because you have the dangers and disadvantages of both a car, and a bike, and the advantages of neither.

road legal quads are not designed too carry a passenger. unless they are the agricultural type, which you cant pass an sva for to have on the road outside a radius of a few miles from the farm you register it at i believe mate

in short, you cant take a pillion on a road legal quad

I'd learn how to ride one before heading off on the road. Despite the four wheels, just turning the bars isn't the way to drive it. You have, like a bike, to move your weight around in order to get the things to turn. You also have to watch they don't overturn.

confused So can a passenger be carried, I tried again phoning the police to find out but they dont know and always pass me onto a useless website.

I should have also mensioned that I am experienced on quad bike and a variety of quick bikes being involved with alot of motocross over the past years, I also have a bike on the road, at the moment so I am aware of the dangers that threaten us more vulnrable road members.

Thanks,
Grant

let him ride it, chances are he will remove both himself and his friends from the gene pool and qualify for a Darwins Award.

Some kids seem to be utter tts, coming to a site to ask for advice and then ignoring the advice that the intended action is not legal and likely to get them killed...

Hi smile

Ummm are you positive about that ??

I live in Bournemouth (nowhere near a farm) and there is a 2 seater quad (with lights etc) that regularly is driven up the road where my shop is and straight past the local police station a couple of times a day...with 2 people on it....

I have no idea of the make but its HUGE and definitely has 2 seats...

All the best Brett smile

I guess he would like some information he can reference rather than a man on a web site said "YOU CAN NOT"

Plenty of people advertising homologated two seat quad bikes on the net, and people offering insureance for two seat quad bikes as well.

recall a case of some farmer letting his 2 kids ride down some road, one got killed after losing control, wonder what it would have been like with 2 kids - easy to tip over ?

cant have been more than a few months back, not ride a bike, would not ride a quad, esp with 2 people, so not an expert, had assumed the other guy knows what he was writing smile

quick google for road legal quad bikes comes up with

http://www.ramquads.com/faqs/default.html
Q: How many passengers can I take?
A: All Quadzilla 170cc,200cc,250cc and 300cc quads are licenced as two seat vehicles so can legally transport two people.

Guess the OP did not bother with google or other search engine ?
if search for
road legal quad bikes +passenger

one day people might know how to use search engines, so far this has not been the case smile
the above site comes just below this thread smile

How many wheels does a quad-bike have, 6 or 8? (4+2 or 4x2?)

Surely that's a mis-nomer?
Just a quad, no?
