reading a dutch mag today in the caff and there was a piccy and article about speed cameras and the lengths the police will go to to trap motorists. The picture was of a wheelie bin stood on the verge that had been doctored and had a gatso jobbie placed in side.....the cheek of it!!!!Now i don't know if it was real but the article did say it had caught thousands of speeding Hollanders and it did look real enough.Anyone else heard that one?

definitely NOT fiction, the dutch are getting really uptight about these, even to the extent that they're dumping trash in them.......... hows about a scamera with a half-eaten curry (over it) thrown in the bin!!!!

The dutch are utter speed fascists; I've seen other stuff from them.

One was an unmarked car (not a cop car, just a normal vehicle) with front fogs, parked by the roadside, except they weren't fogs at all, they were a gatso.

There was another photo I saw, which showed a street. You could JUST make out the little black box stuck to a pole, which was the camera.

The gatso radar apertures on these cars are fitted behind the number plates, or sunk back into the bumpers to make them unobtrusive.
As Al correctly points out, the foglights are fakes and contain a flash module.
Very sneaky. Also the cops are still using the laser guns which have been ruled ILLEGAL, (includes lti20/20) as it is unreliable and innacurate. Furthermore, the speed reading can be confused with a RANGE reading, but if its fiddled correctly, theres no way you would ever know. Hence they are illegal. Still, it dosn't let that little point of law stop em using em.

I presume that we are talking about Holland here.!

Certainly the LTI 20/20 is very accurate here and easy to use. To bring up the distance you have to change mode and that means pressing a button. Certainly i havent been confused yet.

Yeah Tonyrec i was referring to ze dutch.
IIRC there was a case in the US where a guy went to court to try and fight his case against being ticketed.
Everything was going fine for the persecution until the defence lawyer picked up the lti, aimed it at a wall, and got a 4mph reading.
Case dismissed as i recall......

I blame that San Andreas fault.....everything in America moves so the wall was probably doing 4mph..

There would be a big backlash against those here! Can you imagine people's real rubbish going up in flames outside their house every week because someone was upset and saw these as an easy target?

Big consequences!

Tony, I don't want to fall out with you BUT in what scientific capacity can you honestly say you have that justifies your statement?. Just because you point and click a gun that gives a reading doesn't mean to say the reading is correct.

In fact, did you know that the company that re-sales the devices in this country are also the people who come along and defend them should anyone of us dare challenge their accuracy - AND they win everytime. The guy who defends them is also the MD who's company has made £0.5million profit each year for the last two years. It's as bent as a bottle of chips! - he doesn't even have a scientific background.

Furthermore, in my most recent court case, that I won I was threatened by the CPS not to challenge the accuracy because if we did and we won he would take it to the High Court.

Oh by the way the MD of the company is a 35 years former police officer now selling the LTI 20/20 to 97% of forces in the land.

I just thought it would be valuable to point out that not everything is as we see it in life, rant over.

Its a little bit more than pointing and clicking a gun!!

I dont have any scientific capacity, im a Policeman who is trained to use the piece of equipment in question.
In my experience and that of my colleagues theres never been a problem with the equipment in question.

"How do i know that it is accurate"?

Well, theres a series of tests that we do at the roadside before we get our first victim.
This test is using a Marked Traffic car driving towards us at a pre determined speed (using its Police Pilot/Vascar as a measure) and then using the Laser to coroborate that speed.
Once im happy about its accuracy then i will use it.

Obviously the Police vehicle will be travelling at about 30mph and if the laser reads 30.10mph then im more than happy.

Thanks for putting your side, but im sure that every other Trafpol on here will agree with what ive said.

Sorry 'tonyrec' I forgot - you also rely on the equipment being accurate by it's "self calibration" techniques and a drive through.

It's a pity that these guidelines seem to be overlooked sometimes and the device is deemed to be accurate just because it is!

Put it another way, I know that to be used by the police it has to be home office approved, well at least if you are to use it for a successful prosecution. But what's to say that those Home Office approvals are spot on - 100% - no corruption either?

I'm just trying to open up a few ideas here, if you know what I mean. I don't believe that any device is 100% fullproof and it would be wrong to say so. Yes they are accurate used in the correct circumstances but sometimes it would appear that they can be abused and still be deemed "accurate" in a court of law, have a look here, e.g.:

See Case 11 on www.pepipoo.com

Best regards.
