Dumped car question

Someone has recently dumped a car near me that I need some bits off I cannot find anywhere. I would be quite happy to buy it from whoever is the current owner but cannot see any way of finding out who this might be. It is only a matter of time until the car is removed and then crushed which would be a real bummer.
Have tried putting a note on it but I cannot see the owner coming back to read it. It has no tax but has plates on it, no papers with any ID inside it etc.
Any bright ideas anyone?

Tempting as it is, I would look a bit daft stripping a car when the owner walks up to me and asks me what the f**k I am doing.
I once towed a scrapped car that was dumped on our forecourt for weeks down to a yard. Four visits to court later about a car the owner claimed was worth £2000 it was case dismissed. In actual fact the car was not worth scrap value, I fully expected to get done for it. From my experience in life the law is only there to shaft people who are not criminals.

hmmm, legally, what you are suggesting is theft so id be careful, though i have been sorely tempted to do similar. one problem is that the dvla are actually (sometimes) not bad at tracing the owners of dumped cars and in a few occasions ive seen the owner come back for his/her dumped car. obviously, while they dumped it in the first place (and were too stupid to take the plates off/tax disc out) they should expect it to be in one piece when they get back. id suggest sending off a v62, claiming the car, stripping it and then removing its identity and getting the council to take it away for free, but the dvla now charge £19 for this for some reason, so it can work out quite pricey. just out of curiousity, what car is it?
The car is a white Escort 4 estate 2 door. Now if you are wondering why I would want it the answer is the doors. I have one I have owned for 16 years, same colour but with rotten doors which I want to keep going for as long as I can.
I can make the car disappear with no trace no problem but will not do it whilst I am not sure if the owner still wants it. I am happy to buy it but do not know who to pay. The legalities of the matter are of no interest to me, but not interested in stealing anything from anybody.

Keep your eye out. Not sure which part of the country you are in. But in our force area, no tax, previous keeper details, it gets dragged away.
Also, no tax, even with a present keeper, if it is a fire risk then it can be dragged off, and keeper enquiries will follow.
If you see a truck coming to pick it up, have a word, find out where it is going. In a month, if unclaimed the operators can do what the want with it.
Ie. It's yours.
Or......have a word with friendly PC. Register interest and see what he can do.
If it is prev keeper, no tax. He can at least try to sort something out for you as it is only going to get crushed.
I've done it in the past, even if it means that he can tell the recovery lot that you are interested or tell you where it is going.

Yes your right, but if it's dumped I bet it will end up getting crushed or you will have to put your hand in your pocket for them doors. Recycling is a good thing but it should come as no cost to you!

I did try having a word with my local nick, they were unable to help. To be fair to them it is not really what they are there for. I suppose it could be argued that if they gave me the owner's details and then some sort of bother came from them doing so they would be dropped in it so I can see why they might not be too keen to help.
I have stuck a note on it and if the driver who lifts it reads it he may be sharp enough to see there might be something in it for him. Not much more I can do.

You obviously know how its done, so shouldnt take too long doing it.
Quite honestly, if it has been dumped by the owner, youve spoken to the police and it hasnt been reported stolen, then its been discarded, thrown away and abandoned.
I normally see about one new one a month on the way to work. Whenever I see one by the side of the road it recieves a "police aware" sticker within 24 hours and upto a further 24 hours later normally has every bit of glass broken and everything removable gone. Normally torched shortly afterwards...

Ok, after a bit of asking around this is how the story goes.
First you contact the “scrap-it” people which are supposedly a new initiative to clear the streets of dumped cars. You tell them where it is and they refer you to the correct department that deals with that area. You give them the exact address and registration number and they send out an inspector.
Within 48 hours the car will have a sticker on it, it will either be a 7 day investigation sticker or a 24 hour remove and crush sticker. After 7 days the second sticker goes on for removal and crushing if no owner has been found.
When the final 24 hour sticker is on and only then, you can ring DVLA and apply to register and keep the car legally. They halt the removal and crushing and send you the appropriate paperwork. Once that is done, it is yours and you then have to SORN it straight away or you will get a fine for not taxing it.

Whilst working under the bonnet on the distributor, he heard a noise and felt the car move. Someone was jacking up the back wheels. What the **** do you think you're doing, says John.
Oh, it's OK, says a voice, you have what you want, all I want is the back wheels.

I thought I'd revive this thread as I'm in a similar situation. There is a dumped (I think) car local to me which I would like to obtain / buy.
I've left a note on the windscreen but doubt this will be of any use as I suspect the owner will never return.
I've also informed my local police station who said that "they will see what they can do". I have given them the location and registration of the car and my contact details but it's obviously not going to be their top priority!
Is there any other way I can make contact with the owner? I reckon I'd be doing everyone a favour by clearing the car before it gets torched etc.
I don't want to do anything illegal such as removing the car without permission but I need to act quickly as I go on holiday on Thursday.

Do you have any mates with a transporter ?
If you are going to do theft, get it towed to a more convient location.
I go to a scrap yard near here and the guy has a contract with the council for dumped car removal.
He has a list of Parts I want should he have to remove a Mk2 Cavalier along with my phone number.
Incidently, My Brother in Law has a Sign in his front screen that says : THIS IS NOT AN ABANDONED VEHICLE - PHONE XXXXXXXXXX IF YOU THINK IT IS DUMPED.

I'd do as suggested above - about applying to register it after the 24 hours notice goes on, and get someone to do the legalities for you while you're away. If you contact the disposal people directly, they may be willing to help out in exchange for a donation to the Christmas party fund?
The scrappy across the road may have some ideas?
