After some advice please folks!… MOT expired at midnight last night, as did the tax, has been for test first thing this morning and passed. When I went on to renew the tax it said there was already a pending renewal and if I renew it I could be charged twice, so waited until this afternoon, checked and it’s still showing as no tax or MOT and says can take a few days to update. What’s the best move as I don’t want to be pulled over and equally don’t want to pay twice?!

Missing information I think.

A "pending renewal" sounds like you have been paying by direct debit, or standing order?

But that can't be the case because you went online to renew (presumably) and you wouldn't have done that if you had set up a direct debit.

Unless you have already renewed, or have a direct debit in place, then surely you'd ignore the warning as it's only yourself paying?

Sorry, yes. Pay by direct debit each month. I was assuming as it hadn’t taken payment due to the MOT expiring I’d have to go back on and renew it online?

Is it worthwhile checking the garage has entered the pass online? Have you checked the site itself?

I remember last time my car was in for a service and MOT it was when I checked the MOT site I knew they must be done. Once entered, the database was updated immediately.

I have the certificate here, so I’m assuming so. I’ve checked the gov website and it’s not showing as it’s got a MOT. Although it does say it can take a few days to update, which is currently no use as it won’t let me set up a new payment until it’s showing as in test.

So on the mot check website it’s now showing as it has test. But on the tax check website it’s showing as no tax or test!

What does your bank account say? If you have the DD set up, then the intent to pay is clear.

Quite likely they only run through a list of renewals once a day, so I'd look tomorrow to see if they've taken the tax.

It might be easier in future to do as they suggest, get the MOT renewed ahead of time.

This wouldn’t worry me in the slightest - just take a screenshot of the tax page, just in case.

This, has the payment gone from your bank account?

If not, the tax has lapsed through no MOT and you need to renew it.

This seems the case, by all accounts the tax payments begin to process 1-2 weeks before they’re actually taken, so if no MOT is present at that time then they won’t generate a payment. Will have to set up as new.

But you said the MOT expired "last night"!

So, if the process began "1-2 weeks before they re actually taken", you car was MOTed!

It certainly used to be the case that’s it’s got to have a valid MOT from when the tax starts.

I avoid having new cars registered on the 1st as you can’t retax them until the MOT had been done.

You're correct, of course. I should have remembered that.
