Just ordered and had delivered a few parts for the old Scoob from Japan, and was fully expecting to have to pay VAT on the amount before they were delivered, however, RM have just delivered and gone without any mention.

Will i be getting an invoice from HMRC for the VAT or is that it?

The same has happened to me a few times and I've only ever been charged before delivery.

So I would say, un-expertly, probably not.

I shipped in a welder once from Spain. A few days after delivery I got a notice saying I needed to pay for a package. Only £5 or so. I paid it and was delivered an empty jiffy bag. I assumed this was the import fees.

Cheers.

The value was £120 so no import fees were due but I am sure I should be paying vat on the parts and delivery.

I’ll sit tight and see what shows up in the post.

If it's over £135 you will be charged VAT, under £135 if it's been bought via an online trading platform of some kind VAT will likely be inclusive. I just bought a JDM G shock watch from a Japanese marketplace and value translated at £129, I didn't pay any fees so you should be good.

Ah ok thanks.

It was from Amayama, and they seem to be able to source parts that otherwise one could have trouble getting.

Must say, they do seem to be quite reasonably priced compared to many and they weren't actually due for delivery until the 12th.

Under £135 the seller should charge VAT... but many don't, and I hear that there's no enforcement.

The EU has a similar rule that foreign sellers have to charge VAT. But most countries actually enforce it and will perform customs processing the old-fashioned way if it wasn't paid, or as often happens if the seller did charge it but messed up the paperwork.

Fron the paperwork I have which shows all the costs, the only breakdown from the total is the shipping cost from what I can work out.

It is all mainly in Japanese however!

Seems to be a complete gamble importing stuff these days - some weeks you'll get a parcel and there will be import duties on it. A few weeks later, the next parcel with the same contents turns up - and no charges.

If you don't get an invoice before or during delivery - you won't get one

I bought some motorcycle jeans from Amazon UK a while ago. Turns out they were shipped from a Polish outfit & I had to pay VAT before customs would release the package. I argued the toss with Amazon & got a refund for the VAT amount as I had purchased via their UK website.
Another case was a friend posting me some headphones from the US; £65 invoice for customs duty & processing fees. A complete faff & a real shame as they were a suprise birthday present!!
Anyway, if the OP didn't get an invoice prior to delivery for customs/VAT, I would be amazed if any further action will happen - how on earth can every parcel coming into the UK be physically checked??

Last week I tried to buy some drive belts for a 1981 Aiwa boom box from a company in the US.

Couldn't find the United Kingdom in the drop down menu when trying to enter my address.

Emailed them under the heading of, "Where's the UK" and promptly received a rather, I thought, snotty reply informing me how since Brexit the UK had become a tax collector and he didn't have the personnel to deal with it.

I ignored him and bought the same three belts from a company in Canada instead which are in the post already.

Struck me as odd because I know we are not the only country to this with vat.

Occasionally I buy old motorbike parts from the US and have noticed a lot of US companies have stopped shipping to the UK.

If an invoice comes from HMRC, just say "what delivery?"
Assuming you haven't signed for a delivery.

The invoice will be from whoever delivered the parcel.

It was delivered by Royal Mail.

I had to sign for it but that was it!

I've bought a st-tonne if parts from Amayama over the years, sometimes quite large orders, and from what I can see they include all fees and duties in the amount they charge. So they sort it.

Ah ok cheers.

If thats the case, they are very reasonable on price, especially on stuff they can get, that one would think would be NLA!

Might have to get another order assembled!

Ah, fair enough.
As others said, I've only ever had charges before they would deliver, never after.
So I think the OP is in the clear.

Agreed, if charges are made, they won't deliver until paid (unless you have an account with the courier).

Sometimes they don't charge even on high value stuff, especially if from the EU, don't know why but I'm happy they don't. It seems to depend on the courier - IME some, e.g. UPS always charge whilst others seem less bothered.

You should, however expect them to so, if they don't it's a bonus.

I love them. Brilliant website design with the parts diagrams, and then being able to find different revisions of part, and even pattern parts for some discontinued items. Great. Also prices are good.

I've consistently been surprised at how quickly they deliver, considering they are ordering in the parts, sending it from Japan etc. I've usually had the box in my hand (and what a box... Those guys know their cardboard and packing tape!) more quickly than if I order from the UK main dealers (even when they claim the part is in stock in the UK).

Although, my speed record for an order from Japan was an eBay store. I ordered a part on a Monday, and had it fitted that Thursday.

The vast majority of importing, and hence import duty and VAT charges, is of course done by large companies.
Us joseph and josephine public are a drop in the ocean.
Hence the de-minimis level being quite reasonable.
It's just not worth the paperwork.

I think I have been charged once, and again that was something from the land of the free.
