Shocking story...

This lad has been in the UK since about 2006, been arrested 49 times and finally drops a whopper and gets 17 years for arson/burglary

The article states he's a Polish national so could he be sent back to serve sentence? We need all the spaces we've got for tweeters etc

I dont see any issue with sending him back to Poland to serve his sentence, saves the British taxpayer keeping this scum here. I also doubt that Polish prison are any sort of holiday camp.

I thought the home office had a legal duty to deport any foreign national that has been served with a sentence over 12 months?

Could be wrong though

Side note, do we proactively ask for British citizens to come back to do their time here if convicted abroad; thinking of this guy who honestly can't work out why this isn't a better known story! (content warning - animal abuse of the worst kind)

I'd agree

Isn't the onus on Australia to deport him though?

I doubt Poland would want him back.

Shouldn't this be in NP&E?

I have travelled recently to Vietnam and Cambodia. Both required my fingerprints when entering. These were taken digitally at the border.

Don't we do the same? Flagged up as a criminal, plane back home pronto.

There are 2 ways he can go back:

(1) Facilitated Return Scheme - if he agrees to go back voluntarily he might have a month or so lopped off his sentence and receive a lump sum from £250 to £1,500.

(2) Deportation at the end of the sentence. Some Judges make specific reference to say the term and to be considered for deportation. And as you say, any FN convicted of an offence with a sentence of more than 12 months are considered for deportation. Cue the constant appeals to stay etc etc.
