Daughter is across from South Korea and has a Hertz hire car. She returned the other day and it looks like someone has keyed the back door. Scratch is approximately 5/6cm long and you catch your fingernail, so through the top coat. Also stands out a mile as it s a black car. Thinking of getting it repaired locally before she returns it but unsure if that s advisable?. Looking online her excess could be up to a £1,000?

Does she remember signing an excess waiver or paying a premium for a lower excess?

I'd check the actual agreement your daughter signed for exact excess amount.

But it will depend on the hire company as to whether they'd be fair with their repair charge or not...but invariably it would still probably be cheaper to get a SMART repairer around.

A ChipsAway type place will have that sorted for much less than her excess if you can get an appointment before it goes back (assuming she doesn’t have excess cover).

Was it definitely not there already?

Check the damage report given at time of hire and see if it was already noted down.

I'd touch it in and hope for the best.

Had a load of boards fly off the top of a car ahead and into the front of my (black) hire car in Portugal a few years back. I scrubbed the material transfer off (accidentally scuffed the paint to pieces in the process) and brought it back to shiny with boot polish and kitchen towel. Thankfully this lasted long enough to be returned without incident.

Going to try a local body shop, just wasn’t aware if it was a no, no and if the hire company find out she will get in trouble.

Hertz are very good - emailed the damage report and ALL the photos of the car BEFORE I drove off the yard.

Additionally they gave a half page plain english summary of what they charge for - scratches/scuffs longer than 10mm are charged.

The excess under normal CDW is likely to be about 2,000 unless she reduced it to zero.

IF she has comprehensive travel insurance the policy will often cover the excess of the rental car -my excess on the travel insurance is about 1 - 200.

To answer the question - if the repair can be done properly - may be worth it - however just check your travel insurance first.
