Car just had its MOT.

They did the health check and sent me the video.

One of the tyres 2.93mm of tred left near the edges, other 2.8mm near the edges

Gets the MOT.


Nearside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
Offside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))

Healthcheck = upsell opportunity

I had same brake pads 80% worn so 20% left in my opinion
MOT = Pass, with no advisory

Surely cirian75 only had advisories for the tyres?

Ussrcossack Brake pad amount remaining is not an MOTable thing, plus they cant easily see them with the wheel on. If the brakes pass the roller test that is a pass, they can only then advise unless there really is a very visible defect, which would more than likely mean they would fail the roller test anyhow.

I replace my tyres at between 3 and 4 mm tread so 2.93 would be pretty low for me. The biggest drop off in tyre wet weather performance starts when tread depth goes below 3mm, which is why the usual recommendation is that although the legal minimum is 1.6, the ideal minimum to change is 3mm.

My guess is that at those measurements, the tester thought it would be unlikely that the tyres would remain legal by the time of the next MOT in 12 months, therefore he has highlighted this to you as an advisory, so that you are aware and you can keep an eye on the tyres in the interim.

My mot tester will advise for tyres if they are below 2.6mm of tread. There is no set standard as far as I know, only the legal limit.

Struggling to see what the problem is? You're being advised your tyre tread depth is low aka "probably need replacing before the next MoT" . Surely that's a good thing ?

Which is EXACTLY why things nearing limits are advisories, they will likely fail next test.

The legal limit used to be 1mm whilst all of Europe was 2mm so UK for some obscure reason changed to 1.6 instead of 2mm, unbelievably they left HGVs and Coaches at 1mm.

I had this a couple of years ago. I knew they were getting low but it was the summer and we hadn't seen rain for weeks:

Do not drive until repaired (dangerous defects):
Nearside Rear Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (5.2.3 (e))

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Offside Rear Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))

Both tyres were fitted at the same time. Had new tyres on order but they hadn't arrived from the EU (took weeks rather than days).

Plan is to replace all 4 with Conti Prem 7's, the best tyre in the 215/55R17 class with the 94 load, Michelin P5 sports are available but 98 load and Vitara's are already a bit floaty on the front end so sticking to 94 load.

At my last MOT I had already asked the garage to replace the rear tyres so they had them in ready to be fitted.

They have a policy of doing the MOT first in case there is a failure related to brakes, tyres, suspension etc requiring the wheels to be removed so they don't have to remove them to fit the tyres before the MOT and then after any failure to remedy that.

The downside is that the MOT had two advisories re rear tyres near the legal limit which they then replaced after they had completed the MOT.

I think I am correct in thinking that the outer 1/8th of the tread on each side is not 1.6mm, but "visible tread"?

It's 1.6 mm across 75% of the width of the tyre, so 12.5% of each edge could be bold.

My assumption is the OP likes a clean mot, and wanted to avoid advisories where possible.

I am the same to some exten: unlike many, I actually look at my car during the year and don't wait for the mot guy to tell me the wipers are split, the washer fluid is empty, lights are out or tyres are down to the cords.


(No, i am not much fun at parties, but seeing as I don't go to any, it doesn't really matter... )

Because they could have 5000 miles or more left in them. It would bug me too.

I had misting of oil on the dampers as an advisory on my car.

It was ACF50.

Annoying as it wasn't beyond the wit of a tester to tell the difference.

No you are incorrect. The MOT Manual says:
"Either side of the central three-quarters of the tyre can be devoid of tread (‘bald’)."
