Just to let other PHers know, just got Nipped at over 700m at 81 on a busy M5 from a camera on the bridge over the opposite carriageway. He saw me long before I saw him, and waze warning was too late.... Be careful out there. Gloucestershire. Had to ask for the pics. Easily see it was me and not wife driving as well.....

Be careful out there.

Busy M5.

81mph.

I’m not a saint, I’ve certainly had my fair share of worrying two week waits, but I wouldn’t tell people to be careful when clearly I wasn’t being wink

Why not? You’d want others to make the same mistake you did?

They seem to like sitting on opposite carriageways. Was a plain A&S van parked on the A303 in an Eastbound dual carriageway lay-by with the camera out the front hatch presumably catching predominantly the westbound carriageway as they swept around left hand curve on their side. No doubt was catching them both ways though as he was fairly inconspicuous.

I wouldn’t trust Waze for a second… the police also have access to this and merely remove the notification of their presence!

I’ve had more points than prizes over the years. A few sore fines to accompany them too! I stick the cruise at 75 these days and just make progress. It’s not worth the worry nowadays. biggrin

Waze doesn't include unmarked police cars.

I remember a trip up the M5, it was a particularly nice and sunny day and traffic was light, so it was easy to make good progress. Most of the traffic was doing a sensible 75-80, but every so often you'd see a speeder zooming past. One that caught my eye was a lowered, modified MX5. About 10 minutes later, he was sat on the hard shoulder in front of an unmarked police car (which now had all its lights on).

I have noticed a proliferation of camera vans on motorway bridges lately.

Keele M6, Gloucester M5 being the usual suspects.

I got done at 80mph between junction 14 and 15 of the M5 earlier this year. Annoyingly I'd been cruising around 70 but as the traffic bunched up in lane 1 and 2, I gave it a few extra mph to pass in lane 3 and they caught me at 80mph and second reading was 78mph as I remember it and was slowing down under the gantry.

Fortunately just a speed awareness course as first time in 26 years being snapped.

Since then, I have taken a job which requires about 30 miles of M5 each way. 1-2 days per week. Partly for the sake of fuel efficiency I tend to do ~65mph but often see people fly past and camera vans on the bridges between Stroud and Worcester are common, so they must be catching a lot of people!

They're out on bridges between J23 & J24 too, as you go past Bridgwater.

How did you Manage that? They don’t give speed awareness course for breaking the limit on the motorway unless an average speed camera zone for some reason!

My wife got done this year for 79! First offence and straight to 3 points! I queried the lack of speed awareness course offer and they stated latest govt legislation that speed awareness courses aren’t offered for motorway infractions!

I had a Speed Awarness course after getting caught on the M1 in Northamptonshire and it wasn't average speed.

National Motorway Awareness Courses (NMAC) are still actively offered across the UK as part of the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS).

I don't know where you got that snippet of useless information from but it is completely wrong.

I have and know of others who have had SACs for motorway excess speed not in an average speed area.

Disappointed. I thought this was a thread about an early E28 BMW M5.

You've got to keep it at or below 80mph on the speedo, if you're caught at an actual 81mph you're probably at 85mph+ indicated

Not this again, please.

I'm sure *some* modern cars still have inaccurate speedos, but everything I've driven recently is pretty much spot on.

Nah, everything new I have drive is at least 2-3mph out. The car knows, but displays differently.

I got both mine for variable limits.

68 in 60 on the M4 / M5 junction.

80 on the M4 Smart motorway near Reading.

I've never been caught speeding in a average zone or any where else.
