Simple question really . . . I know where the cameras are in my locale and on my commute, but I want to defend myself against mobile speed traps/scamera vans.

Do all these devices work by laser? I guess the answer is a laser jammer, but do I need one for the front and one for the back, or are most "nicks" from the front?

I don't care about the dubious legality of these things, as the powers that be have no cares about the dubious morality of victimising safe drivers.

Yeah most of em are by laser. It is much more common to get caught from the front, although they can, and will sometimes target the back of the car. The only way to be completely sure is to install both the back and the front, but this can be costly, so do front first, as this is highest risk. And yeah, you do want laser jammer(s). Have a look on ebay, because some of the shops sell exactly the same products there for about £100-£150 cheaper than the instore/web price.

Also take a look at the uk speedtrap guide (www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/)for reviews and more info.

Happy shopping

If you saw that BBC programme tonight, you'll probably want an AK47 or similar.

Only even been done for speeding once - and never stopped in person. I didn't know a thing until the NIP came through the post. Followed it up to discover I was caught from behind by laser - by a camera van marked up to make it look like a plumbers!!!!!!! No, I am not joking either. A friend who is a solicitor saw the 'plumbers van' at the Police Station. It is only because of him that I discovered how I was done.

So, for complete protection it has to be jammers front and back, a GPS system, radar-laser detector, chaff, decoy car and a convincing disguise. Or go slowly.

Is it "safe" to use these laser jammers then? Presumably if Mr Plod stands sees you approaching a trap and all his equipment goes crazy he is more than likely to stop you, investigate then chuck the book at you?

The legality is questionable. The first case of somebody caught for using these devices has now happened, after a clever person managed to go past 6 laser vans without switching the jammer off, think the person is getting done for perverting the course of justice/interfering with police duty? Scamera operators got suspicious when they couldn’t get a reading, so took the reg and pulled the car, to discover jammers in front grille. The idea is that when laser is aimed at you, the jammer device in the car bleeps like mad, you check speedo, adjust speed to legal speed ASAP, and then turn jammer off allowing them to get a reading of you at/below the limit. (They take multiple readings, so at first they wont be able to get one, then they can gladly get speed after you’ve slowed)

The best and cheapest way to defend against camera vans is to STICK TO THE LIMITS IN AREAS THEY ARE LIKELY TO BE CONDUCTING CHECKS. But that would mean concentrating on driving rather than everything else that affects people in motor vehicles

Yes. Concentrate indeed, even when a large intimidating white van is up your chuff, and he will undertake you because your not going quick enough for him.

Ah, that'll be the ever-expanding areas where the speed limit is ridiculously low for no good reason then?

I think most of us do concentrate on driving, but not on ONE SINGLE INSTRUMENT ! madcop have said yourself that you keep having to fill in your internal excuse forms, and you know where checks are being conducted !, if you can't do it how can we ?

Still livid, formerly upright member of society.

Have to fill exemptions out when they are activated whilst driving under blue lights to jobs. Any other photo taken is dealt with in the same way that you or any other motorist is dealt with, even if its a marked vehicle. No blues and no command and control log to attach to the exemption means provisional FPT issued.

Why so many PHrs caught for speeding then? Must be deliberate acts if it is not lack of attention

A while back I was chating to the sales assistant in my local Maplin Electronics. At that time they sold a Snooper branded laser diffuser (don't know if they still do). He said that he had sold 2 laser diffuses to policemen to fit them to their own cars because they were fed up with getting caught by the local SCAMers vans!

Most of this c**p could be avoided if they just adjust the limits to sensible amounts. I mean 70mph top is pedestrian for this day and age. Whenever I drive on the motorway, if the roads are reasonably clear, no one is doing lessn than 75-80, and most go 80-85. Does this mean they will stop all of us? Or just the guy in the flash car?

I mean Germany seems to be safe enough without this limitation on its motorways. Yet we have a 70 mph allowance on narrow country roads, were errant sheep or b*s*a*d tractors can come out of nowhere and rearrange your future smartish! Sensible, as per...

Nicholas

Errrrrr actually its 60 mph unless its dual carriageway Probably another reason why PHrs get caught 10mph over the limit
