Accident advice
Discussion
This moring on my way to work some jerk ran into my car. I was queueing in traffic when matey boy decides he's too important to queue and sails to the front of the queue and cuts in front of me, unfortunatley the gap was not big enough and he caught the right rear wing of his car on my front left bumper. No damage to my car, dint and scratches on his. He leaps out of his car and accuses me of running into him, kind of hard as I was actually stationary at the time, any way after a 'heated discussion' I drove off and left him too it, not very bright I know but he really was an idiot and I was late for work.
Now, somebody at work has told me that I should report it to the police and my insurance company in case he tries to sue me. What should I do?
Any advice appreciated
Andy

Reporting it does'nt cost you anything and will give you peace of mind.
My GF's brother had a similar thing ages ago with a member of the Max Power brigade. 3 weeks after the accident Max starts calling up saying Gf's Bro owes him money for a cracked splitter and petrol tank.
The GF's brother was going to pay up until I got involved and told the lad involved to get down the police station to report his side of things because we'd just done that. Never heard from him again!

If you did not exchange anything other than heated insults, then you MUST report it to a Police station. You should have reported it as soon as practicable and that means not driving past the next Police station without doing so. You MUST report this within 24 hours of the incident if you have not complied with exchanging correct details. You have obligations to exchange registration numbers, name and address of the drivers, name and address of the owners (if different) and insurance details, even if no one is injured. If you fail to do any of these things and he has done so, you could end up in a pretty sticky situation. DO IT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING.
In addition to this....if matey boy has gone to police, reported whole incident from 'his side', written it up well including pics of his wing and a nice little explanation of how you "werent paying attention and clutch-splipped your way into him" (or similar)....who do you think the insurance co's will believe when they see you havent even reported it?? You could get a nie claim for his damage, and personal injury and......

Similar thing happened to me last year in. A loony lorry driver cut past my car at some lights and brushed my front drivers side wing. Scratches etc. He kept going and I followed assuming he'd stop. He had a dirty plate and my brother got most of it. Made a not of time/place etc.
He ended up not stopping. I gave up finally as I realised I was so pissed off I was driving like a loon myself through traffic. Plus I had to get somewhere urgently.
It's an area I don't live near so on my way home I dropped into my nearest cop shop. They were so helpful (NOT
) when I explained all the details I knew and gave them the approximation of the plate. They said, they couldn't help me, and I should go to the local police station where it occurred and fill in some forms. I told them I didn't know the area and it wasn't a million miles away anyway so couldn't THEY pass on the forms if I fill them out then and there. Lets just say they couldn't be bothered and gave me excuses about a complex communication network and rules about interstation communication. T*ss*rs.

Nicholas
