Just shopped my 1st drunk driver.
Discussion
Was leaving the pub with my mate driving and we ended behind this bloke in his 306 pulling out from in front of another pub. He was all over the place, doing 15 mph one minute, 50 the next. This guy was definately soused! We lost him for a second, ragged it to find him (in an M Coupe) and he was miles away, must have been doing close to 70! Pulled into a supermarket filling station behind him and called the cops who were sending someone over.
What is the chance that they would have got him (we were about a 2-3 minute drive from the local station)? What percentage of these calls actually end in a conviction? This was about an hour ago and I haven't had a call back from the police, am I in any chance of getting a reward, or more to the point will this prick be off the road?
Either way I'm happy, Thanks, G

Good chance hes at home sleeping it off and they missed him or dident bother.
But Who Lnows I may be wroung.
Situations like these depend on what unit is available and where the nearest available unit actually is when this type of call comes in. I can tell you that on receipt of such information, a general observations message is put out for all units with registration number, make, type and colour of supect vehicle, direction of travel, last see in the locality of ...., and registered owners address (which if a lease or company owned vehicle is not all together helpful). If there happens to be an uncommitted traffic patrol unit available, they will normally be allocated with the task of finding the driver.
Outlaw is right that a lot of these types of call will end up with the target of the information getting to his/her destination before the police can allocate and react to it. Very occasionally, these drivers are actually caught in the act. The problem that Police have is that unless the information is being constantly updated by the caller, the method of 'search and detect' used to find the vehicle is largely down to guessing and luck.
I can tell you though that once the information has come to light, then the vehicle will be included in a target package for the local police to pay attention to and in my force, the Traffic/Roads Policing Dept run a pro-active section that collate and act on all information in relation to road Vehicle crime and drink driving. They have daily bulletin sheets which are sent to the units working the specific areas where information is relevant to these offences and they then target the suspects with unmarked and sometimes marked units.
In your case, the driver you reported may probably have got away (this time). Now the Police have the details, he may not be so lucky in the future if he is a persistent danger to others through his behaviour.
You will not get a reward from this information. If you want to claim cash rewards for such information, then you must do it through 'Crime Stoppers'.
The fact you have done your civic duty should be reward enough

that could explain why i was followed for a few miles by an unmarked omega then pulled for doing a relatively minor 37 in a 30 (bit of dual carriagway)! he let me off though with a lecture etc which was pretty cool of him. (i know i've been spotted on many occassions speeding NOT drink driving)
I will echo what madcop stated earlier, your information would have immediately been dispatched to any available district and traffic unit out and about, I can tell you the officers in the police car would have appreciated your info, and personally I take great professional pleasure in dealing with drunk drivers.
Nice one...

No he isn't, see this thread for details. www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=10&h=0&t=32898
A similar situation happened to my a few years ago.
Myself and the wife was on our way to Skegness for a holiday (don't laugh) when this Astra over took me in a 30 limit forcing me to break hard. When following him, he kept hitting the kerb and was occasionally drifting over to the on comming traffic. My wife called the police from the car phone and we gave running commentry on the situation. The police asked if I could follow. Once we hit the national speed limit country lanes he procedded to drive at speeds in excess of 90mph in places, sometimes forcing cars in the oposite direction into the verge. I kept a safe distance away. I follwed him for at least 10 miles. Eventually the police informed me that they were waiting in a lay-by a mile up the road and to let them pull behind the car. They then pulled the car over.
I didn't stop, but although they took all my details, I never heard anything about it. This has always bugged me. I would have thought they would have needed a statement or something.
