This may be just a cruel rumour, but I will pass it on anyway, the speed is set at 78mph
The new electronic signs on the M6 were switched on this Tuesday and they are rigged with SPECS speed cameras. This probably applies to all the new signs being installed on the M62, M60 and M56.
Specs is a computer – camera based system. As you pass the sign a digital camera reads your plate and then when you pass the next one it reads it again and calculates your average speed between them.
Ticket is automaticaly generated, no human in the chain

Don't know if there's any truth in this or not. I think there were SPECS somewhere on the M6 at some point but widespread implementation is usually nothing but urban myth (don't anyone dare mention the M4 again!).

Aren't there some on the M4?

SPECS on the M6 through the Thelwall viaduct roadworks for sure. But I've never seen any outside of roadworks.

The bit that points to an urban myth is saying they're built into the information matrix signs. Just the same as the M4 rumours.

The M4/M6 cameras story is a very well know email virus/hoax.

It works as a virus because the content of the email causes people to forward it around, thus taking up resource on servers etc.

Just like the "Bill Gates wants to give away his money for tax reasons" hoax.

Went up the M6 on New Years day and there are SPECS camera's just prior to J19, around Knutsford services. Don't know if they are switched on but they are on ornamental type posts at the side of the carriage way. Also, as LexSport say's, they are on the Thelwell viaduct through the roadworks.

Forgot about the Knutsford ones, the ones at Birmingham are now removed.

What about the ones on the M1 southbound at the junction of the M25? Definitely some form of cameras monitoring traffic, but I suspect its just monitoring traffic speed.

Never heard of anyone done by them, and there are no warning signs etc.

Think they're part of a Highways Agency long term traffic flow study covering the M1 from J1 to J19 (see the HA website for details). I emailed them about it, but never had a response. There are certainly cameras there, but not the "blue pole" set up that all the other SPECS systems I've ever seen have been on. No warnings either. I've regularly driven that section at an non legal velocity and never heard anything.... (famous last words!)

Much of the M6/M42/M5 is peppered with cameras, but they look like ANPR and CCTV pairs, not the single CCTV style plus infrared emitters that SPECS uses. Dunno about M6 through brum and oop north though.
