Caterham LSD?

Hi All,

Just bought a Series 1 caterham (handbrake under dash) with 1800Zetec. I've already decided to remove the straight cut box as it's not needed with 175PHP.

I'm after an LSD for it and assume it is a sierra or Capri diff in it? I just want to clarify that the diff is almost certainly a specific type then I can keep an eye out or do I need to remove it and identify it first...!

This sounds like I'm being lazy... which I probably am but if it is common knowledge what type of diffs are fitted then I can just keep an eye out for one.

Jeee wizz, does that make any sense!

7" sierra diff sounds familiar.

It is a Sierra diff in there and it is possible to have it rebuilt with an LSD. Road and Race Transmissions are the kings of getting Sierra diffs set up for Caterhams. This is important as the wrong ramp angles on the diff can make the car behave badly.

Recently the new cars have been fitted with BMW diffs and there is also a Titan diff, but I have no experience of either.

Depends if it's a de-dion or a live axle.

If it is live axle then it could be Marina or Escort. Pics would help the assembled mass!

It is a DeDion axle car. Photos would be great although I keep the car in a lock up so I can't supply them yet... but I will.

PS I assume that the DeDion is better than the live axle ones?..

Quaife also do an ATB diff. (Automatic torque biasing) which is nice for the road, as it doesn't completely lock up. But it doesn't like kerb hopping, so not such a good choice if you want to do a lot of track work.

I bought a complete Sierra ATB diff from them with a brand new casing, and they where great to deal with.
They are making thier own new Sierra casings now, so no need to scrat around scrapyards for old diffs.
Of course nothing wrong with using your existing case, as the original Ford CW&P are far superior to anything you can buy new now, I've read.

Well following the advice I got from you guys on here I contacted Phil at Road and Race. I really can't recommend him enough. Really easy guy to deal with and great service.

We now have a nice shiny type 9 gearbox and an LSD to put back in the car.

Turns out the gearbox in the car is a heavy duty type 9 5-speed quaife worth around £1000 which Phil also informed us so this really won't have cost very much once we sell that!

This was a true showing of why Forums like this really help.

The site I linked to with the LSD info is Angus's, he's now living in the US but his 7 is still in the UK and I believe is getting a bit of use now and then on track.

Hello all,

Following on from the previous stuff here, I thought I'd upload a couple of pictures of the old gearbox we removed. This is a heavy duty gearbox but if anyone would like to identify it some more then that would be great as I'm planning on selling it.
