I dropped this question on the end of another thread and got no reply so thought i d start a new one. It may be a dangerous question to ask and I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc, but is there an general unbiased or objective view out among the crowd that says (based on a like-like spec/conditioned car) that cycle winged cars tend to be worth a bit more or hold their value better than an equivalent clam winged car?
I understand a cars only really worth what someone is prepared to pay for it and I understand the 'fashion'/aerodynamics/road positioning arguments for them but I'm curious on views on this if there are any.

Broadly speaking, I think cycle winged cars are probably "worth" more than clamshelled cars simply because they tend to be newer, in general.

They tend to be more desirable BUT if you find a potential buyer who likes clams, they may hinder a sale rather than help it.

My first caterham had clams and to be honest i think it took a little longer to sell, and for slightly less than if it had had cycles, my latest caterham has cycles and i must admit i prefer them.

I would say in recent years (last 15) only a very, very small % of cars have come out of the factory with clams.
I dont mind them either way but if I was going to buy a car today and there were 2 identical ones for sale I would go for cycle wings just for ease of re-sale and less weight.

I'd say that it's easier to convert from cyclewings to clams than the other way around. Taking the clams off will leave numerous holes in the side skin that will need seeing to.

Will that be your final modification when yours is built, the hole saw treatment.

We have clams on ours, and I think it looks good but we also have those silly 16" wheels which fill the arches to help with the aesthetics.

Only problem with the clams that can see is that they are probably trying to make the car fly at higher speed and they probably allow more stones to flick up and damage the rear arches.

That's my opinion!

There's no doubt that cycles are far more popular than clams. One thing is you can see the wheels going up and down.

Am I right in thinking that normally the wide-track front suspension is too wide for clams? Could be bks though.
