I you have a hour, and are interested in Caterham's endeavours ten years ago to 'branch-out': Beyond the Seven, then this BBC 4 programme may be of interest to you.

History can be cruel, and it often repeats itself.

Enjoy

Watched this yesterday.

Very interesting, and my first glimpse behind the scenes. Obviously things have moved on somewhat in the last decade and a bit, but I was somewhat surprised at the contradictory positions : "we're custodians of an icon" vs "if we can design something new, the 7's history".

Makes me wonder whether the current ownership, who carry none of the baggage that went with building the brand into what it is, will feel any need or desire to maintain the 7 as part of the stable in years to come.

Well if they are stuck with making a living out of the SP 300 they are not going to get rich quickly; the Alpine deal may be successful but reports of the Seven's demise are premature- we have been hearing them since about 1971...R600 race series just launched, grads as popular as ever, the Top Gear effect etc; future Sevens may be powerd by - boo!- Renault engines but it's here for the long term.

My concern is that, all is well and ticking along nicely whilst F1 money flows. However history shows that F1 funding is as secure as a bankers morals. Think where would Caterham cars be if left high and dry without Tony F funding and their current premises in Caterham town.
