Having been to the CC end of an era event last Sunday I saw quite a few cars with roll-bar mounted cameras. No wires in evidence so presumably all recorded to an internal hard disc.

Can anyone recommend a decent (but not wallet busting) camera?

I have only had my Caterham since October and what a lovely day it was last Sunday for a blat and great to see so many cars...........in stark contrast to this weekend! But the few times I have been out have been fantastic!

Go pro is great and I decided on the replay xd1080. It has a smaller profile than the gopro being a bullet style camera and similar quality with less fish eye lens distortion.

Ive had quite a few different cameras on my cars over the years and if you flick through my other videos on my you tube channel you can see the difference in quality, bullet cam was pretty good recording to a camcorder, I then replaced with one of the first original go pro"s, quality is good even compared to bullet cam, but last year I bought a Go pro motorsport Hd ( think I paid £180 new ) and I think the quality is top draw, straight from the go pro to the Tv its clear as a bell its unreal , bear in mind you tube compressed quality but click on the following you tube link and select HD 1080 for an example of what you get.(worth mentioning I also run an external mic which simply plugs in ) there is a newer version of the gopro out now but I struggle to see how it could be clearer,

This is good news to hear. I picked up a gopro in America over Christmas and all I need now is the weather to get outside. (It is snowing again...)

Thanks for the answers and it looks like Go Pro it is.

S Pants. How was the Snetterton track day? Had a chance to post any footage yet? Also I see that you got your Go Pro from Ebay and I assume that you were happy with the purchase? (it was brand new and un-opened)?

Cheers

Glad you are back in one piece!

When posting the footage can you let me know which external mic you use? Is it the same one for the Drift and the Go Pro?

Go pros are Common on lots of Caterham installs now.

Personally they always seem to suffer too much with picture roll, but I assume this I'd down to the poor mounting in most cases.

I know the new versions allow a remote so you can see what you pov is looking at, but that was also a negative for me on the early versions.

I went for the Vio-pov, and now have the HD version.

Just another pointer for you:

http://www.exeros-technologies.com/action-cameras/...

This is basically the same as my camera system at a bette price point.

One of the other member of the Caterrham club bought one, and had good results.

As with all of thee systems running in HD, you need to be mindful of the recorded video size.

My friend Brad left his running on a trip to Silverstone and the file was almost 2gb in size!

Dogcam bullet set up for me. Cheaper than gopro, and because it has a separate bullet cam to DVr set up I find it more versatile and subtle. Have used it attached to my roll bar or velcroed to helmet. Excellent piece of kit and cheap. You can also get cheap replacement front lens pieces so if it gets cracked or badly scratched its an easy fix.

I ordered a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition last week and I'm dying for it to arrive. Thanks to smartypants recommendation I've just ordered that mic too. I'd already ordered the external mic attachments but couldn't find a suitable (ie, cheap enough) mic to try with it.

Looking forward to getting it all linked up, I'll get a video uploaded next weekend hopefully (Assuming all arrives in time!).

Hi
I use a Gopro Hero2 on 720p thumbup great quality cam and footage is very good .
Here's a small video http://youtu.be/i1vHAa9Vpt8 of me testing the external mic (cheap stereo one off ebay ) with the skeleton case .

The only problem is you can't use it in the wet with a skeleton case as it's not waterproof frown

Here's a quick demo I did over the weekend, just to trial out my new Go Pro Black Edition and a cheap external mic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Utg2SVAjM1c&fea...

(It's not a particularly exciting video, but it serves it's purpose as a test)

it's not too bad but the sound is still a little shaky. Video wise it looks much better on my computer, where it's full 1080p at 60fps! Youtube scaled it down to 720p, but you can still see how smooth it is.

I've got a trackday coming at the end of the month so I'm looking forward to testing it properly then!

EDIT: Youttube took a while to get a 1080p stream up but it's there now. I'm not convinced it's the full 60 fps though.

A great day last Monday in the sunshine. Couldn't believe how lucky we were.

I filmed everything with one GoPro Hero 2 camera then pieced it together, as you will see there are a couple of bits not quite synced properly but I like it!
